At Home with Augusta Koch (Gladie, Cayetana)

Hello and welcome to REPLY ALT, the best email newsletter about music in the entire world which is also sometimes a podcast—the best podcast in the entire world. Today it’s a podcast.Sometime around 2013 I heard a band called Cayetana. They only had a handful of songs to their name at the time and that was all I needed to hear. I was instantly hooked on the Philly trio’s scrappy take on punk, especially the vocal work of singer Augusta Koch. Her voice had this ragged edge to it and it flared wildly and unpredictably. I just loved it. I reached out and asked if I could interview them and they showed up to the interview in the most comically packed Subaru I’d ever seen. The minute I saw them piling out of their rock band clown car, I was sold. Cayetana lasted for two albums and roughly eight years, but, fortunately, Augusta is still extremely prolific. She had a Herculean output last year with her new project, Gladie, having released one album and four EPs. (I am required by law to mention that one of them contains a Weakerthans cover.) It’s been really inspiring to watch her evolve as an artist over the last few years. Augusta and I had a chat recently about staying creative, letting projects fade away once they’ve run their course, and the soul-sucking nature of promoting yourself on the internet. I got way more wistful and nostalgic than I typically do in these talks. What can I say, genuinely kind people are hard to come by in the music industry!Listen to our chat above or on Spotify or Apple or wherever you like to listen to these sorts of things. Oh, and as I was feeling nostalgic, I was going through old photos and found this one of us in the back of their van, a candidate for the worst photo of me ever taken.Top by photo by Jess Flynn. #30 - Augusta Koch (Gladie & Cayetana)

Behind the Vinyl

It was a real honor having Augusta Koch on the podcast this week. Everything Augusta touches turns to gold. I have been a huge Cayetana fan for years, and I am really enjoying the direction Gladie is heading in. Augusta has a fascinating story. She grew up in the Poconos where she always attended live shows. One thing she did note is that she was always one of two women at the local gigs. At times she didn't feel accepted by the people she went to shows with. Her taste in music and opinion about certain bands was always pushed to the side. Augusta always wanted to play guitar in high school but an unfortunate experience with a creepy guitar instructor ruined any motive to pick up the instrument. It wasn't until she returned home from one year of living in Colorado for college that she picked up guitar again. That is where the beautiful Philadelphia music scene comes in. The music scene was more welcoming and there was mutual respect amongst  all of the bands. Augusta met Kelly when she first moved to Philadelphia and was eventually introduced to Allegra at a party. They had a similar interest in forming a band. That is when Tom May of the Menzingers let Augusta borrow an amp and guitar so that she could start practicing with what eventually formed into Cayetana. The group practiced for a long time before they played a show. In fact, Cayetana had to get talked into playing their first gig. That led to big things. The release of Nervous Like Me took off and gained a following. Then the band opted to self-release New Kind of Normal, which did equally as well. In 2018 Augusta started a side project that she labeled Gladie. This project was a two-person group that she formed with Matt Schimelfenig. Eventually it turned into Augusta's main focus once Cayetana decided to take a break. This year the group released a full-length album called Safe Sins, which we discuss in full detail. There have also been a few EPs released, and also one coming out this week!  Augusta's dog, Benny also pays us a visit, which is even more the reason to listen. The Musicians Guild welcomes Augusta Koch (Gladie, Cayetana)

The Musicians Guild with Steve Choi

Augusta Koch is a singer/songwriter based in Philadelphia. Her old band Cayetana opened for RX back in 2015 and I've enjoyed her vocal stylings ever since. We catch up from her studio/creative getaway in the Pocono Mountains and in this conversation we discuss being prolific out of insecurity, Gladie releasing 2 eps and a full length in 2020, her getting into making stained glass, feeling like the Celestial Seasonings bear, quitting drinking, how she met Mike Park and signed to Asianman Records and good/bad memories from listening to our older works. We also get into a lot more than that. Hope you enjoy, thank you so much for your support and for listening. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
