q: The Podcast from CBC Radio
Lukas Nelson tells us about his band's new album, A Few Stars Apart, and shares how the record was inspired by time spent with his family (including his father, Willie Nelson) during the pandemic. Two of the artists leading this year's International Indigenous Music Summit, ShoShona Kish and Amanda Rheaume, discuss the summit's goals, as well as the current state of Indigenous music in Canada and beyond. To commemorate Record Store Day (Saturday, June 12), Mike Levine of Triumph reflects on the event's significance as one of its official ambassadors, and shares a song off the band's special reissue of their 1981 album, Allied Forces. Prolific mystery writer Ian Hamilton (best known for the Ava Lee series) talks about his latest novel, Bonnie Jack, which sees him step away from familiar characters to write a story based on a painful secret his father kept for decades.
Episode 82 of The JamBase Podcast, a partner of the Osiris Media Network, features an interview with Lukas Nelson. JamBase’s Andy Kahn interviewed Nelson and discussed the new Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real album, A Few Stars Apart, which comes out on Fantasy Records tomorrow, Friday, June 11. Nelson was interviewed over a video call from his home in Maui, Hawaii. The chat mostly focused on A Few Stars Apart, which was recorded last year with producer Dave Cobb. Advertisement The recording sessions were held in Nashville at historic RCA Studio A, where Nelson’s father, outlaw country legend Willie Nelson’s pictures hang on the walls. Nelson discussed what it was like working with Cobb, whom he first met while collaborating on the feature film, A Star Is Born. Lukas revealed it was Neil Young’s guidance that influenced the decision to record the album on analog 8-track tape. Nelson talked about his songwriting process and how the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the content on A Few Stars Apart. He detailed time spent during last year’s lockdown with his family at their property near Austin, Texas, when some of the songs on A Few Stars Apart were written. Kahn asked about Nelson’s spirituality and how it impacts his songcraft and they touched on other themes explored on the album, such as the impact of the pandemic, the importance of family and more. Advertisement At the time of the conversation, Lukas Nelson & POTR had on their upcoming tour schedule only two shows in September in Colorado. Nelson made clear the band intends to tour in support of the album, with more tour dates in the works — including four newly-added shows in June to celebrate the release of A Few Stars Apart. Lukas Nelson knows all about legacies, indeed he’s been hard at work carving his own for most of his young but extremely eventful life. Balancing his work as the front man of Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real — an emergent and vital force in American music — with his regular gig as Neil Young’s band leader and lead guitarist — and of course, the never-ending road alongside his father in Willie Nelson & Family — in song after song, on stage after stage, Lukas has sharpened the edges of his singular sound, one that nods to his influences while also pushing forward into uncharted territory. We have meet several times in Davos where Lukas was sharing his music and insights on the state of the world. In this episode we talk about the Education system at large, thoughts and reflections on the time in March 2020 and the Covid-19 situation. Lukas's point of view on bridging the gap between those who have, and those who don't have. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/julian-guderley/support
