Mike Leigh's Music

Sound of Cinema

Matthew Sweet is joined by director Mike Leigh to talk about his ideas about music for films and to look back on some of the scores for films such as the historical dramas 'Mr Turner', 'Peterloo' and ‘Topsy-Turvy’. He first came to prominence with the Play for Today TV drama ‘Nuts in May’ in 1976, and for many years he was known for his improvised domestic dramas. He tells Matthew about his work with composers Andrew Dickson (‘Naked’, Mean Time’ and ‘High Hopes’) and Gary Yershon (‘Peterloo’, ‘Happy-Go-Lucky’ and ‘Another Year’). There’s jazz from Marianne Jean-Baptiste (‘Career Girls’) and an excerpt from one of Rachel Portman’s earliest scores (‘Four Days in July’). And we hear Carl Davis’s versions of Gilbert and Sullivan (‘Topsy-Turvy’).Mike Leigh’s work is celebrated by the BFI in October and November on the Southbank in London and at Home in Manchester, with the release of a new print of his 1993 classic ‘Naked’, and with the appearance of a new, revised version of ‘Mike Leigh on Mike Leigh’.

#31 - NUTS IN MAY (1976) - Alison Steadman / Roger Sloman - Dir. Mike Leigh

This week its time for another obscure or lesser known film - and we thought we would change the pace a little and instead of going for a completely random or even awful movie like we have in the past, we felt that this lesser known gem of a movie would be ideal viewing. The hilarious and cringeworthy Nuts In May (1976) first screened on the BBC in the 70's as a part of their play for the day series and follows anally retentive control freak Keith Pratt (Sloman) and his timid wife Candice-Marie (Steadman) as they take a relaxing camping holiday in Dorset. But soon Keith's sanity is put to teh test by his fellow campers. One of the early films from British filmmaker Mike Leigh, director of Secrets and Lies, Happy Go Lucky and Vera Drake, this has always stood out as a favourite in our household. Watch Nuts in May for yourself here - https://amzn.to/3DY2TtzIf you are listening to our older episodes you may notice we used to be known as We Need To Talk About Movies Podcast, well, now we are WN Movie Talk Podcast and you will find us via facebook and Instagram etc under that title. Mike Leigh - Legendary Director, Writer, Filmmaker

Crossing the Line

Mike Leigh is a staple of British cinema and theatre having had a directing career that spans seven decades. Seven is also the number of Oscars he's been nominated for. He's also helped to create stars we know and love today including Gary Oldman, Tim Roth and Liz Smith, as well as collaborating with well known actors such as Timothy Spall and Jim Broadbent. There's a lot of myths and misconceptions around the way Mike works, from how he chooses his actors, to how much he improvises. So in this episode we spend plenty of time clarifying those topics, and delve into how he got started and his thoughts on newcomer filmmakers. Are there too many new actors each year? Do we have less creative freedom now? Are our dwindling attention spans dictating movie styles?Sit back and enjoy this week's episode of Crossing the Line.Mike's Links:https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005139/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_LeighCrossing the Line:https://twitter.com/CTL_Podcast https://www.instagram.com/crossingthelinepod/ https://crossingthelinepod.com
