EP126: All About Metabolic Optimization, Living A Longer, Healthier, and Better Life w/ Joel Jamieson

Vigor Life Podcast

Vigor Life Podcast · EP 126: All About Metabolic Optimization, Living A Longer, Healthier, & Better Life w/ Joel Jamieson Joel Jamieson is widely considered one of the world’s foremost authorities on strength and conditioning for combat sports, having trained many of the sports best athletes since 2004. He is the author of the bestselling book Ultimate MMA Conditioning and is a contributing writer to several top magazines and a frequent guest speaker at conferences and seminars all over the world. Joel has worked with and consulted extensively for teams and organizations ranging from Navy SEALS to Life Time Fitness and his Bioforce HRV system was used by teams in the NFL, NBA, MLS, NCAA, and more (now called “Morpheus). He is best known for an individualized approach that is both based on solid science and yet practical to apply. Joel created 8weeksout.com in 2009 to help clear up the misinformation and confusion surrounding energy systems. Since then, the site has become one of the authorities on strength, conditioning, and performance. Joel is one of my closes friends and a person I spend a lot of time geeking out on the science of training, longevity, health, and also business. Since he’s also one of the worlds foremost conditioning and metabolic optimization specialists, I’ve had him back on the show for the 3rd and, and he never fails to deliver top notch insights, practical application, and some big “aha” moments that will help you upgrade your performance, health, longevity, and overall results. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN: What is “metabolism” and the 3 biggest myths around it. Why the idea that if you just burn more calories, you’ll lose more weight is wrong, we dive into the research of Herman Pontzer you must understand. Fascinating research showing people with higher metabolism aren’t necessarily leaner than people with lower metabolisms, why this is and how it applies to you. How calorie restriction leads to longevity, and whether you should be under eating. The difference of optimizing for longevity vs. optimizing for performance, do you have to give up one for the other. One of the rarely talked about reasons of why we lose muscle as we age, and what we can learn from it. The power of mitochondria and why it’s something you MUST understand and develop (and the ways to do it). The TTENNS approach to improving every facet of your longevity with specific examples. Strength training and walking Is NOT enough if you want to optimize your health and longevity. What is metabolic flexibility, its benefits, and how to apply it in both training and nutrition. What’s “zone 2” and why is it now becoming popular, the benefits of it, and the myths surrounded by it. Why metabolic work requires more frequency but not as much intensity (aka, you’re not doing enough cardio!). Why Joel think metabolic work comes first, then strength and how Cardio will NOT affect your strength, muscle, and performance in a negative way. How to ice baths, sauna’s, float tanks, etc. affect longevity and where do they come into play. The future of individualized supplementation and therapeutics in improving health and longevity. And much, much more! How to recover smarter and faster * Joel Jamieson

Simon Ward, The High Performance Human Triathlon Podcast

Recovery is something that is uppermost in my mind on most days. As a coach, I’m focussed on how to balance the training for each athlete with enough recovery for them to adapt but not so much that they start to lose fitness. If you plan your own training this should be an important consideration for you as well. It's different for each of us and our recovery requirements will change weekly (maybe daily) as our life stresses alter. How we recover can take many forms and the athletic press (whichever form that takes) is full of adverts and articles about how to maximise and even ‘hack’ recovery. In today's guest, Joel Jamieson, I think I have finally found someone who is an expert on this topic.  Joel is a strength & conditioning specialist who has a real focus on athlete recovery. He first came to my attention when I read one of his articles about specific recovery style workouts called Rebound Training. He has been working with HRV for the last 20 years and so part of our conversation will also tie in nicely with some of the other podcasts from recent months.  If like me you are in your 50s and you are concerned about whether you get enough good recovery, pay particular attention to some of our conversations later in the podcast. Some of the topics we chat about include: What is recovery and how can we measure it? What part does HRV play in monitoring recovery? Are gadgets better than our subjective feel for estimating recovery? How to create your own specific recovery workouts How to recover better For masters athletes -  How to change your training to improve recovery What changes with age to slow down the recovery process and what can you do about it? If you’d like to follow Joel Jamieson, please use the following links Instagram coachjoeljamieson Facebook 8weeksout LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/coach-joel-jamieson/ Website 8weeksout Joel has also written some great articles: How to use HRV to import your conditioning while avoiding burnout and injuries The beginners guided to HRV & recovery How mental stress can sabotage your fitness and what to do about it Why doing more isn’t better and 3 ways to boost your recovery All pain, no gain: Why the HIT training obsession has failed us all How to train to recover faster than ever You might also be interested in these links: Joel explained a lot about the recovery App - Morpheus - that he has created. Quite Franklin

With a background in mathematics, analyzing the data of my training was key to my athletic performance. When I began training in Seattle, Joel Jamieson introduced heart rate variability into my strength and conditioning. At the time HRV was rarely known and barely used. Today however, nearly every smart phone is equipped with HRV apps connected to devices like Apple watches or Fitbits. Joel and I talk about recovery from training and how technology can improve your recovery, which is the management of stress on the body. We also dive deeper into HRV's benefits to improve stress management of life impacting health and longevity.

Joel Jamieson on the Train, Recover, and Repeat Mindset

Physical Preparation Podcast Archives - Robertson Training Systems

When Joel Jamieson, Founder and CEO of 8WeeksOut, began working with athletes and clients in his gym 20 years ago, he realized the key role of recovery, as well as its unpredictability. While the results of training were driven by recovery, recovery was, in turn, driven by factors coaches couldn’t track inside the gym: sleep duration, nutrition quality, and physical movement. Joel’s passion for closing this gap between training and recovery led him to create Morpheus, a fitness platform designed to accelerate recovery and fitness. Joel joins me today to discuss his “Train, Recover, and Repeat” model and explain why it is crucial to take client and athlete recovery beyond taking a day off. He describes the interrelatedness of sleep, quality nutrition, movement, and training, and how they all work together to encourage recovery. Joel also discusses how integrating recovery in a training program increases client retention at the gym and underscores the importance of sustainability in health, training, and fitness. Training is important, but recovery dictates how much you can train. – Joel Jamieson This week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: What heart rate variability is and how it led Joel to work with improving recovery Joel’s “Train, recover, repeat” model Earning the right to train and the importance of sustainability in losing weight and getting healthy The correlation of sleep, recovery, and results Joel’s advice for getting better sleep Why you need physical movement even if it’s your off-day from the gym The four pillars of recovery Why rest and recovery don’t mean doing absolutely nothing Filling the gaps in programming and using days off as preparation for high-intensity training days The real cost of not putting enough recovery How integrating recovery days into a training program leads to a better fitness business Why there are more conversations around rest and recovery today What Morpheus is and how it helps clients become more accountable for their health, fitness, and recovery Related Content: Joel Jamieson on Merging Fitness and Technology to Unlock Human Potential Physical Preparation with Joel Jamieson Physical Preparation with Joel Jamieson #2 Connect with Joel: Morpheus 8WeeksOut 8WeeksOut on LinkedIn 8WeeksOut on YouTube 8WeeksOut on Facebook Joel Jamieson on LinkedIn Joel Jamieson on Instagram Joel Jamieson on Twitter Book: Ultimate MMA Conditioning IFAST University is BACK!
