#009 – Plot Challenges with Mina V. Esguerra

Adulting for Authors

I interview romance author Mina V. Esguerra about her writing process and how she manages to hit her word count goals. We also go in-depth about her difficulties with her latest book Kiss and Cry (which is available now so go get it). While we chatted, we had a yummy lunch at Mom & Tina's in Greenhills on the Lunar New Year (yes this episode is super late sorry). But wait, there's more! At the end of the episode, there's a recording of a live reading from last year's #RomanceClass FeelsFest of an excerpt from Mina's book What Kind of Day, the first book in her Six 32 Central series. The live reading was performed by Gio Gahol and Graie So. Mina V. Esguerra writes contemporary romance novels. Visit minavesguerra.com to learn more about her writing, publishing experiments, events, and advocacies. When not writing romance, she is president of communications firm Bronze Age Media, development communication consultant, publisher, and publishing mentor. She created the workshop series “Author at Once” for writers and publishers, and #romanceclass for aspiring romance writers. Her young adult/fantasy trilogy Interim Goddess of Love is a college love story featuring gods from Philippine mythology. Her contemporary romance novellas won the Filipino Readers’ Choice awards for Chick Lit in 2012 (Fairy Tale Fail) and 2013 (That Kind of Guy). BT047. Jay E. Tria, Six de los Reyes and Mina V. Esguerra: #romanceclassFLAIR

Book Thingo

Guests: Jay E. Tria, Six de los Reyes and Mina V. Esguerra | Host: Kat Mayo | Audio producer: Rudi Bremer | Recorded: 19/08/2017 Manila It all started on Twitter. I think I semi-jokingly suggested that we need romance imprints for indie books, so that readers can find books with a similar reader promise. Author Mina V. Esguerra responded, and within a few months our discussion evolved into a #romanceclass writing workshop that aimed to produce books that could be loosely grouped into an imprint that we decided to call Flair. To do this, Mina challenged the workshop participants to write steamier romance, to use familiar tropes with a Filipino flavour, and to use alternating points of view between the romantic couple. So what is Flair? Flair is not a publisher, but we’re a team that works with authors to prepare their books for publication. This includes manuscript development, editing, cover design, and promotion when the book is launched. The team is made up of #romanceclass community authors, readers, editors and designers. We select the manuscripts we think best reflect Flair’s goals, and we work extensively with authors on the editing process. Hopefully, this is obvious in the final product, yet transparent to the reader. The process wasn’t quite as easy as we expected, but the team we have gathered to support Flair has been a joy to work with. I hope you give our launch title a try, and watch this space for more new titles! Finally, now that you’ve had a chance to hear readings from some of my favourite romances, I’d love to hear your favourite romantic scenes. I’m challenging you, our listeners, to record yourself doing a dramatic reading from your favourite books and authors. Post your video or audio on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook — tag us, so we can find it! — or email the audio file to podcast@bookthingo.com.au. Please include the title and author — we would love to include as many of your readings as we can in a future podcast! Guests Jay E. So when she strikes up a conversation with a nerdy but gorgeous stranger on the train, getting serious is the last thing on her mind. Been there, done that, and she has the emotional baggage to prove it. At 24, Ringo knows what he wants — and when a train flirtation turns into a night he can’t forget, he knows he wants Kris. But it’s clear she has other plans, and they don’t include him. So when they find themselves on the same flight to Seoul, it’s Ringo’s chance to turn up the heat, and convince Kris to take a risk. In a new city, with someone new — the right someone — what could change? Maybe nothing. But also, maybe everything. Missed a previous episode? Don’t do it.Lindsay and Jake have loved each other (as friends) since their senior year in college, and she made sure they didn’t become more than that. The guy now known as Jacob Berkeley, star of a wildly successful TV show, was always too much for her. Too handsome, too many questionable hookups, too restless. Also sensitive, fun, and genuinely caring. She’s his emergency contact, his “zombie apocalypse buddy,” his holiday dinner companion. They’ve kept up this low-maintenance friendship for years, surviving graduation, their new careers, her move to New York City to work as an environment consultant. But then, days before a big climate change conference, he shows up, with big news. Jake wants to pick up what he never managed to finish in college. He wants to save forests again, work in environmental research – and he wants her.Don’t fall in love with Jake…Why again?Contact author Mina V.
