THIS IS REVOLUTION>podcast Ep. 176: Reframing the Toxic Masculinity Discussion w/ Dr. Heidi Matthews and the Saturday Crüe

One of the persistent features of the culture war both in the United States and beyond has been the question of masculinity. For those on the right, there is currently a war being waged against men and boys. Indeed, masculinity in and of itself is often – it is claimed – being portrayed in a negative light or, to use the current in vogue terminology, “toxic”. What is masculinity in the 21st century and is it toxic? Are we living through a crisis of masculinity? And if so, what are the courses of this crisis and how is it playing out in the field of politics? About Heidi: Heidi Matthews is an assistant professor of law at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in Canada. She researches and teaches in the areas of the law of war, international criminal law, criminal law, and law and sexuality. She splits her time between Toronto and rural Newfoundland and Labrador. The Popular Show

The threads of Heidi Matthews’ heretical early critiques of #MeToo, feminism and the law are knotting together once more, in a presidential election where most liberals and the left have banded behind a Democratic candidate with #MeToo allegations against him, and under the shadow of a second Supreme Court Justice appointment by Donald Trump. Everyday Analysis join Professor Matthews and “Mr Heidi Matthews”, political commentator and producer of the Michael Brooks Show, David Slavick, to discuss America’s current conjuncture and the New Yorker's suspension of Jeffrey Toobin for masturbating on a Zoom call!

On Creepy Men (with Heidi Matthews)

Public Intellectual

Professor of Law at York University Heidi Matthews has been writing about "creepiness," particularly as it relates to gender relations. What causes a man to be labeled a creep? What do we do about the creeps in our neighborhood? Why, with all we know about police violence, do we turn to the cops when we encounter someone we consider creepy? Are we just trying to increase marginalization on already marginalized populations, like the homeless, the mentally ill, the poor, and the neurodivergent? We discuss all this and uh also Joker. http://jessacrispin.com Support this podcast: http://patreon.com/publicintellectual

Heidi Matthews on Sexual Violence and International Criminal Law

Ipse Dixit

In this episode, Heidi Matthews, Assistant Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Nathanson Centre on Transnational Human Rights, Crime and Security at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University, discusses her article "Redeeming Rape: Berlin 1945 and the Making of Modern International Criminal Law," which is a chapter in the book "The New Histories of International Criminal Law: Retrials," which was edited by Immi Tallgren and Thomas Skouderis, and is published by Oxford University Press. Matthews begins by describing the consensus feminist position on how international criminal law should conceptualize and punish sexual violence. She then contextualizes that position in relation to the jus in bello/jus ad bellum distinction, and explains why viewing wartime sexual violence as merely discrete wrongful acts is inadequate. She uses the sexual violence perpetrated against German women in the aftermath of WWII as a lens to conceptualize the relationship between wartime sexual violence and the prosecution of war. And she reflects on the ways in which jus in bello and jus ad bellum may inform one another. You can read her related article "As we remember VE Day, remember too the German women who were raped" here. Matthews is on Twitter at @Heidi_Matthews. Hosted on Acast.
