Classic Replay: Are we alone in the universe? – Paul Davies & John Lennox
What does it take for life to get going in our universe? Is there intelligence in the stars or right under our nose? Renowned astrophysicist Paul Davies chats to Oxford Professor of Mathematics John Lennox. A popular science author, Davies’ book ‘The Eerie Silence’ examines the likelihood of the universe producing life elsewhere. John Lennox is a Christian Mathematician and philosopher. He is the author of numerous books including ‘God's Undertaker: has science buried God?’ and has debated Richard Dawkins on several occasions. Davies' work on the fine tuning of the universe for life has been sympathetic to theism. In this programme, Lennox challenges Davies to look to design not just in cosmology but in the cell. They also chat about what the discovery of extra-terrestrial life would mean for Christian theology. Originally broadcast on 17th April 2010. Cancer Development and Genetic Insights - An In-Depth Examination of Cancer Cells in the Human Body with Paul Davies
Finding Genius Podcast
Is cancer truly the result and product of damaged cells? New research may suggest otherwise. Listen in to find out: When dated, when cancer cells first began appearing If single-celled organisms can get cancer How a cancer cell or cluster can be thought of as an organism Author and professor at Arizona State University, Paul Davies, returns to share his new work and recent cancer research. Paul Davies discusses the new ways of thinking about cancer and its progression within the human body. Cancer cells can be considered embryos that have gone wrong, which calls into question the relationship between cancer and genetics. Cells have many methods of reacting to and fighting developing cancer. An equilibrium of cancerous to non-cancerous cells must be maintained in the tissue to avoid developing a tumor, but almost all cells have the potential to become cancerous. It was such a wonderful experience chatting with Professor Paul Davies, who is an incredible theoretical physicist, cosmologist, astrobiologist and best-selling science author of 31 books. He has published hundreds of research papers and review articles across a range of scientific fields. He is also well-known as a media personality and science populariser in several countries. Professor Davies is the author of Demon In The Machine which, in the very first chapter, begins with the question ‘What is life?’ so I naturally had to begin with the question of panspermia, which is the theory which suggests that life on Earth did not originate on our planet. Big questions were tackled this week as we dove into our origins, whether or not we are alone and the hunt for a new earth.See more from Professor Paul Davies Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PhysicistPaulDavies/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-davies-33634114 Website: http://cosmos.asu.edu/Further Reading and Resources: This episode is based on The Black Cloud by Fred Hoyle and can be purchased here.
