Stephanie Johnson Holding the Line

Ngā Pātaka Kōrero - Auckland Libraries

Going West’s Sir Graeme Douglas Orator in 2015 was writer Stephanie Johnson. Addressing the festival theme, Holding the Line, Stephanie delivered a hilarious and biting satire of neoliberalism in New Zealand, donning a wig to take on the parodic character of Amanda *Tauiwi Reinhardt Carlton, the ‘National Party Poet Laureate’. * Tauiwi is a Māori word for non-Māori, used here by Johnson to poke a stick at well-heeled upper-class conservative white women. The author of 16 books including The Writers’ Festival, six plays and radio dramas and two books of poetry, Stephanie has appeared at Going West many times since the first festival in 1996.She is the winner of multiple awards, fellowships and honours; in 2019 she was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to literature, as part of the Queen's Birthday Honours. Stephanie has taught English and creative writing at the University of Auckland. She is also a teaching fellow at the University of Waikato, and co-founded the Auckland Writers' Festival with Peter Wells, and served as creative director and trustee.

006 | Stephanie Johnson | Learning to Love Yourself on the Journey Toward Wellness

Runner Moms

006: Stephanie Johnson joins Shayla on the show to discuss her self-transformation journey toward wellness. Stephanie is a new empty nester after raising her daughter as a single parent from the age of 17. She has been on a journey toward increased wellness for several years and gives us a raw and real look into that journey. It’s a story of overcoming body image issues, depression, and making the choice to keep moving forward even in the face of setbacks. Stephanie also speaks to the essential ingredient of learning to love yourself on the path toward increased wellness. Stephanie describes how running saved her life in several ways:"I really feel like running has saved my life. Not only from a health perspective but just my brain because, when I started at 260 pounds and so so depressed, like, I was just the whole time I’m training and I’m out there and I’m talking to myself. I’m like, ugh, you’re too fat to do this. You’re never good enough. Then, as I keep going, I realize that I’m starting to turn those thoughts into positive stuff. When you reach a point where you’re so sad and then finally something like, a light comes on, whatever you’re doing at that moment, it’s like, oh, I have to do more of this. So, for me, that’s what running was. Like it’s this tiny glimmer of light where all of the sudden my, you’re too fats turned into you’re doing this," said Stephanie.Support the Runner Moms podcast: https://www.patreon.com/RunnerMomsConnect with Stephanie on Instagram: @changingstephanieShop the Runner Moms StoreVisit the Runner Moms websiteSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/RunnerMoms)
