J. Michael Straczynski & Alexandra Fuller: Live at Politics and Prose
Live at Politics and Prose
Straczynski may be best known as the creator of the Babylon 5 and Sense8 TV shows, but his amazing four-decade career also encompasses screenwriting—Changeling, Thor, and World War Z—writing for several D.C. and Marvel Comics’ series, and creating his own award-winning graphic works. Now in this stunning memoir he tells his own story—perhaps his most fantastic feat yet. Straczynski grew up in the care of adults variously damaged by addiction, mental illness, and poverty. His only refuge from the misery was comic books, and he gradually realized that he, too, could invent alternate worlds. But even as he managed to take power over his future, a terrible secret in his family’s past continued to haunt him.https://www.politics-prose.com/book/9780062857842In a series of deft, powerful memoirs beginning with the award-winning Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight, Fuller has kept readers riveted with stories of her unconventional family’s life in southern Africa. Her moving new book, written with her signature brio and humor, focuses on her father, the adventurous, restless Tim Fuller, who, announcing at age 7 his plans to leave England, moved first to Rhodesia than to Zambia. Writing from the shock of his sudden death in 2015—in Pest, Hungary, of all places—Fuller profiles and pays tribute to a man who devoured life whole.https://www.politics-prose.com/book/9781594206740Learn more about your ad choices. Ep. 247: "Babylon 5" Creator J. Michael Straczynski on Adversity, Triumph and His New Autobiography "Becoming Superman: My Journey from Poverty to Hollywood"
The Chauncey DeVega Show
J. Michael Straczynski is the creator of landmark TV shows such as Babylon 5 and Sense8. He also wrote comic books such as The Amazing Spider-Man, Thor (both the movie and the comic book), and Superman: Earth One. J. Michael Straczynski was also one of the primary writers for beloved 1980s children's cartoons such as He-Man, She-Ra and The Real Ghostbusters. His new autobiography is Becoming Superman: My Journey from Poverty to Hollywood. J. Michael Straczynski reflects on an almost unbelievable childhood full of hardship, struggle, and abuse -- and how he overcame it all to become one of the most influential voices in all of American and global popular culture. He shares life lessons about triumphing over adversity and how pain can be fuel. Straczynski also reflects on the craft of writing and offers advice and insight about how fiction writers should best take on political and social issues in a dire moment such as the Age of Trump. He also shares his thoughts on if his TV series Babylon 5 was copied by Star Trek Deep Space Nine, and what really happened with his script for the World War Z movie. On this week's show Chauncey DeVega shares his thoughts on special counsel Mueller's testimony before Congress and why he was apparently afraid to tell the whole truth about the Trump's traitorous relationship with Russia. Chauncey also shares his thoughts on Quentin Tarantino's new film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. And at the end of this week's show, Chauncey admires a wonderful man who is a real life superhero, that like Spider-Man, climbed 15 stories up the side of a burning building in Philadelphia to save his mother. This week, we welcome the legendary J. Michael Straczynski to the show. For many fans, Straczynski is the author of several seminal runs in both the DC and Marvel universes. For other fans, he's the genius behind Babylon 5. For still others, he's known for co-creating Sense8 with the Wachowskis. And for nerds like me, he was one of the original writers on He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. And, oh yeah, he co-created She-Ra: Princess of Power. But Straczynski has a new memoir out now - Becoming Superman: My Journey from Poverty to Hollywood - that chronicles his horrifically difficult childhood and how he SOMEHOW made it out alive. His father was, as he says himself, "the sampler platter of evil" - which somehow still manages to underestimate the depths of his awfulness.
J. Michael Straczynski is well known in science fiction fandom for creating the seminal TV series BABYLON 5, and recently SENSE8 with the Wachowskis for Netflix. His body of work includes the films Changeling and Marvel’s Thor, and acclaimed comic book runs on the Amazing Spider-Man, Rising Stars, and Midnight Nation. His latest work is a memoir called BECOMING SUPERMAN. For writers, it is a prime illustration of how the craft is more than a hobby or career pursuit – it is an opportunity to conquer reality and make of it what you desire. BECOMING SUPERMAN arrives on July 23rd from Harper Voyager.
