Mit 19 hatte Ethel Smyth (1858 – 1944) ihren Wunsch durchgesetzt: sie reiste nach Leipzig und studierte dort Musik. Energisch webte sie Kontakte bis in allerhöchste Kreise, stritt mit Johannes Brahms und liess Kaiser Wilhelm II bei einem Dinner wissen, dass die Berliner Oper ein «Schweinestall» sei.

Das Leben der Britin Ethel Smyth war wesentlich davon geprägt, sich als Komponistin durchzusetzen und als solche Anerkennung in der Öffentlichkeit zu finden. Sie hatte den Anspruch, in ihrer Arbeit nicht als nebenher komponierende Lady, sondern als gleichwertig zu ihren männlichen Kollegen gesehen zu werden und von ihrer Arbeit zu leben. In Ethel Smyths mehrbändigen Erinnerungen entfaltet sich ein kultur- und zeitgeschichtliches Panorama, das wissenschaftlich noch kaum ausgewertet ist.
