The Triathlete Hour: ep. 58 - Emma Pallant doesn't miss being a pro runner
The Triathlete Hour
This week we’re talking to Emma Pallant. The runner-turned triathlete and duathlon world champ has made a home in South Africa. She talks to us all about what it’s been like during COVID and how tri training differs from running—she had to learn to eat while she races, and she tells us how that lesson required passing out once or twice. Plus, why she turned to tri in the first place after what she thought would be a career-ending injury and why she loves the atmosphere more than track and field.Plus first Laura Siddall and Kelly O'Mara dissect the North American Ironman Championships in Tulsa this past weekend and discuss why was the race dominated by Europeans. Are we about to hit a lull in this weird racing season? We had a few technical difficulties, as is so often the case in the age of Zoom, but just stay tuned and it's worth it.
Mark, Heather and Emma just catch up to discuss Emma's recent victory in South Africa. She also discusses her new sponsors and coach, and helps Mark and Heather answer a couple of listener questions. Another relaxed, fun show for you to enjoy...
Emma Pallant Professional Triathlete: Performance, Perspective and Positivity
Tri Talking Sport
She narrowly missed qualification for the Beijing Olympics in 2008 then injury saw her miss London 2012. Despite the disappointment that ensued it didn’t deter her from following her passion for sport, in fact it made her hungry for more and created an opportunity for Emma to explore and excel in multisport racing resulting in a career of sporting excellence across swim bike and run. Having taken up triathlon in 2012 she spent some time on the ITU circuit before making a move to longer distance racing. She has worked hard to get where she is today but she has made the sport her own, embracing and adapting quickly to the triathlon lifestyle and although running is still her favourite discipline when added to her swim and bike she is a force to be reckoned with. Some of her notable achievements include being a Double World Champion in Duathlon, she also has a World Aquathlon Title, she finished second in the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in 2017 which saw her make her mark at the distance whilst the world was watching. Since then she has podiumed in countless triathlon races at a variety of distances across the world including a 3rd place spot at IM Austria in 2018 where she stamped her ticket to race in Kona. In 2019 she had a podiumed packed season and in early 2020 she finished IM 70.3 South Africa in second place. Last year was not the season she was expecting but making the most of her opportunities she packed a punch at all her racing efforts in the virtual world and in real life.

What does one do with a child who has an excessive amount of energy? You know the type who just can't sit still? Put the pen down, Emma! You let her run to burn off that energy ... and eventually that may end up leading to a running, duathlon and triathlon career. That's what happened with Emma Pallant at least anyway. In between fidgeting with her pen, Emma and I talked about her recent engagement, how she'd like to be remembered or known as a 'doer,' how her Dad loves to win, and her amazing work building a running community in an orphanage.Photo by Getty Images for IronmanFollow Emma - www.instagram.com/em_pallant/Be a part of Witsup and support us by becoming a member so that we can keep bringing you great content - www.patreon.com/witsup
