We're headed to Napa Valley to interview a star of the wine world. Meet Pam Starr, co-founder and winemaker extraordinaire of Crocker & Starr. She's the queen of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, but that's not all! Pam's path to wine started with a plan to go to dental school. Fortunately, wine won out.
In 1997, Charlie Crocker and Pam Starr established Crocker & Starr on the Crocker Estate in St. Helena, resurrecting a world-class vineyard with roots dating back to the 1870s. Charlie is co-owner with Pam, the winery manager and winemaker. Between Charlie’s historic estate that has grown grapes for over 140 years and Pam’s winemaking expertise, vision, and business acumen, the partners proved to be a spectacular match. The winery handcrafts a small production of exquisite wines from select blocks within the 100-acre vineyard. The vines are cultivated following organic principles, and the clusters are hand harvested, transformed into wine through cutting edge winemaking techniques, blending the best of Old World philosophy and New World fruit. Starr presides over the estate’s wines to capture the essence of the vineyard’s extraordinary terroir. The result is complex and balanced, elegant wines that express the aromatic profile of the Crocker Vineyard. The estate Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard, named “Stone Place” yields a wine of distinction with a slight mineralogy and a deep brooding quality of black chocolate that Charlie and Pam consider their crowning achievement. The winery also makes a Cabernet Franc, a Sauvignon Blanc, a Malbec blend named “Casali,” and two wines – a Napa appellation Cabernet blend and a Sauvignon Blanc blend – under the label “Bridesmaid.” Crocker & Starr’s Sauvignon Blanc was rated the “12th Best Wine in the World” in Wine Spectator’s 2006 “Top 100 List.” In 2014, Crocker & Starr began work on their new production facility on the historic Crocker Estate. The building was completed in the summer of 2016, just in time for the 20th anniversary of Charlie and Pam’s collaboration.
In today’s episode of the Mr. Wine Guy Podcast, you’ll get to hear from one of the most recognized and celebrated winemaker’s Napa Valley has ever had the privilege of knowing. Today I introduce to you the one and only Pam Starr, Co-Owner, Co-Proprietor, and Winemaker for Crocker & Starr Wines out of St. Helena, CA. In this episode Pam shares how, from as far back as she can remember, certain circumstances and events in her life were leading her in the direction she was meant to go. Pam talks about her biggest strength in her ability to be resilient, and not only recover from any mistakes that she might make, but her ability to not self-judge or be so critical on herself in the process. Pam also shares an inspirational moment about the late Mary Novak of Spottswoode Estate and just how much of a pillar and a rock Mary was not only to Pam, but also what Mary meant to each and every person in Napa Valley, and also in the wine industry as a whole. If a sense of direction and place seem to be in the forefront of your thoughts, or perhaps embracing the people around you and finding comfort and peace in the idea that you’re exactly where you need to be and to just trust the process, then this episode is for you! This interview in my opinion will go down as one of the most heart-felt and inspirational podcasts you’ll ever get to hear on this show, and it’s with the utmost respect and admiration that I present to you, a winemaker who has set a clear and precise example in life that most people are doing everything they can to achieve each and every day. Ep 69: Pam Starr and Evyn Cameron - Crocker and Starr
The Inside Winemaking Podcast with Jim Duane
Pam Starr has been making the wines and building the Crocker and Starr brands since she first met with Charlie Crocker of the Crocker Estate in 1997. This podcast covers the long story of how Pam built Crocker and Starr beginning from the handwritten business plan. Associate Winemaker, Evyn Cameron discusses Crocker and Starr's portfolio, they ways how her and Pam evaluate Cabernet Franc fermentations, and some of the winery's cool new equipment. Our conversation gets out into the weeds of Cabernet Franc, which is one of the varieties that Pam is most known for. It was a ton of fun to have this Franc geek-fest and discuss a grape that doesn't often get the limelight.
