Our conversation is fun as well as informative. Scott is not just a good read. He's also a good listen. 1.31 Interview –Scott McKain – First be Distinctive, Then Be Iconic When you are Distinctive, you own your industry, and I am immediately attracted to you. When companies in other industries look to follow what you do, then you are Iconic. When you are Iconic, not only do you get repeat business, you also have extraordinary referrals. Three destroyers of distinction; number of competitors, imitation, and familiarity. You have to fight these destroyers. The first creator of Distinction; clarity what you do and what you will not do and for whom. The second; creativity and innovation within the boundaries of carefully defined clarity. The cost to be Distinctive is hire better people, better customer service. The cost of not being Distinctive can often be fatal. Time spent defending against competition is better spent making them irrelevant. A competitor who copies you and has bad accounting, will take both of you down. Incrementally improving the same old things is not an effective long-term strategy.
