Interview - Ismail Elfath (11:23)  Ismail is an MLS referee who made his debut in 2012, and became a FIFA-accredited official in 2016. In 2019, he officiated the World Cup U-20 final, the CONCACAF Gold Cup, and the Club World Cup, helping to earn him the Austin Soccer Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award from The Austin Chronicle in his hometown. In addition, he has officiated some of the best players in the world, including David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez, Thierry Henry, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and more! Most recently he ref’d the MLS is Back final between Portland and Orlando. Fun fact, he was the first ref to officiate a game with the new VAR system.

Elfath was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Austin Soccer Foundation awards gala.He told us his story of moving to the U.S. for college from his home country of Morocco, the chance encounter began his referee career, and the major role he played in developing the Video Assistant Referee system now in use around the world.
