Mind Body Breath - Episode 3: ‘The Breath’ with Mark Russell
A three part series where James Cathcart chats to informed, funny and wise experts about how our minds, bodies and breath interact in that pattern of tissue and synapses and bits of bone and soul that happen to make you — you. In this final episode he talks to yoga teacher, triathlete, and musician Mark Russell. Listen to get practical tips on tuning in to your breath (including a neat trick of counting without actually counting…) and to find out: what porridge has to do with yoga, an unusual technique used in medieval kitchens, and the commitment you make to a banana when you eat it. Thanks to Mark for the music and Jack Steel for the cover art. Find the podcast here on Sanctuary First, in our Sanctuary First App, and on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. WCPEver Episode 361 - Fantastic Four Life Story with Mark Russell
WORST. COMIC. PODCAST. EVER!
On this week's episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!, we have writer Mark Russell on to talk about Fantastic Four Life Story #1, which hit the shelves last week. Following in the footsteps of Spider-Man Life Story from 2019, Fantastic Four Life Story gives us a new look at the history of Marvel's First Family but told by the decades with the characters aging in real-time. Joined by artist Sean Izaakse (Fantastic Four), issue one takes a look at the origins of the FF in the 1960s. Mark discusses the origins of this project, as well as the challenges of representing 60 years of comics in just six issues. We also run down Mark's other ongoing books, including a new horror book coming out from Vault Comics later this year. We are in the final days of taking recommendations for our summer reading project. For 2021, we want to read three mini-series of 4-6 issues in length. We want to read one from Marvel, one from DC, and one from any other publisher. Our request is that the issues or collection is readily available so we can read it and have others join in on the fun. Please get your suggestions to us by May 28. We also review our Pick 3 selections, sponsored by our friends at Clint's Comics. As always, stop by your local comic shop and pick up your books! The trivia for this week is of a Marvelous nature. If you think you are smart enough to get it right, send us your answer and win a prize! We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you’ve been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. Podcast. Re-Release: Mark Russell on Religion, Satire, and Superheroes
This episode is a re-release of my first interview with Mark Russell, author of several books including Second Coming, God is Disappointed in You, Apocrypha Now!, The Flintstones, Snagglepuss, Wonder Twins, Billionaire Island, and more. Superhero movies are returning to theaters soon, and I'm resurfacing this conversation because I think of it a lot when I think of superhero narratives in general.Mark Russell is one of my favorite comic book writers, whose ability to provide satirical and insightful social commentary through popular characters like The Flintstones, or subvert superhero tropes in books like The Wonder Twins sets him apart from other writers on the scene.Of particular interest to listeners of this show, he also writes the comic book Second Coming - a story of Jesus coming back to Earth to room with a Superman-type character. The mere announcement of this book was so 'controversial' that it led to an online petition that quite literally canceled the book before it was published by DC Comics.I talked to Mark about that book in particular in this episode: Mark Russell, author of Second Coming. I wrote about it here.-If you appreciate this show, support it via a paid subscription to The Post-Evangelical Post. Mark Russell is the author of God Is Disappointed in You and Apocrypha Now. He also writes the comic book series Prez and The Flintstones for DC Comics. He lives and works in Portland, Oregon. God Is Disappointed in You is for people who would like to read the Bible... if it would just cut to the chase. Stripped of its arcane language and its interminable passages of poetry, genealogy, and law, every book of the Bible is condensed down to its core message, in no more than a few pages each. Written by Mark Russell with cartoons by New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler, God Is Disappointed in You is a frequently hilarious, often shocking, but always accurate retelling of the Bible, including the parts selectively left out by Sunday School teachers and church sermons. Irreverent yet faithful, this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to see past the fog of religious agendas and cultural debates to discover what the Bible really says www.amazon.com/.../B01D0D3OLK%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt... www.goodreads.com/author/show/7163477.Mark_Russell Hosts: Christie Stratos christiestratos.com Jennifer Anne Gordon www.JenniferAnneGordon.com Heather Gooden www.hmgoodenauthor.com
