When Fitness and Social Justice Clashed (with Alyssa Royse)
Today we're talking to Alyssa Royse, owner and coach at Rocket Community Fitness — formerly Rocket CrossFit — in Seattle. Today’s episode is a bit different from the norm, and Alyssa joins us to talk about a variety of issues regarding representation, diversity, and inclusivity in fitness. Some listeners may be familiar with Alyssa’s name after an exchange she had with CrossFit founder and former owner Greg Glassman went viral in June 2020. Alyssa had written to Glassman expressing concern over CrossFit’s silence regarding the death of George Floyd’s death and the Black Lives Matter movement. Glassman responded with a now-infamous letter calling Royse “delusional” and saying he was ashamed of her comments. Glassman’s letter — and later tweets and Zoom recordings — stirred immense controversy, eventually leading to his resignation and the ultimate sale of CrossFit.Alyssa’s perspective extends well beyond her experience from last summer. She’s a long time coach and business owner in fitness, working across multiple sports. In this recording, she gives her perspective on the responsibilities of multiple stakeholders in strength — from business owners and brands to athletes, coaches, and fans following along at home. We should say it’s a deep conversation that focuses on subjects that could be sensitive to some listeners.
Episode #15: Inclusivity in CrossFit and Lessons from Gym Ownership with Alyssa Royse
The TeamBuildr Podcast
Alyssa is the owner of Rocket Community Fitness in Seattle, a social justice-oriented fitness community that prides itself on its inclusivity. As a supporter of both the CrossFit methodology and the communities it cultivates, found herself at the forefront of CrossFit’s leadership upheaval this summer when an email exchange between her and former CrossFit CEO Greg Glassman garnered media attention.
Alyssa is a long time fintess professional and gym owner. She has a long history of being deeply involved with CrossFit, and recently had an unfortunate interaction with CrossFit Founder Greg Glassman via email that has been shared widely throughout the community.
Alyssa Royse was at the center of a lot of controversy with her letter to Greg Glassman and his response. In today's episode Ackerman (@thejasonackerman) sits down with Alyssa for a very candid conversation on this topic, as well as rebranding, the state of CrossFit HQ, and how affiliates can be more inclusive. If you haven't already, you can read the emails as well as Alyssa's blog posts here. Many people are calling for Alyssa's head and many feel the same about Coach Glassman. As always on Best Hour of Their Day we try to listen first and be open-minded. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jason-ackerman/support
Alyssa Royse and her husband Brady Collins own Rocket CrossFit in Seattle. When she’s not in the gym, she’s helping other gyms and fitness brands around the country foster inclusivity in their approach to fitness. Prior to owning a gym, Alyssa worked as a trained sex-educator, and had years of experience in marketing and entrepreneurship. She thought owning a gym would be easier. Turns out, it’s the perfect mix of all of her previous experiences, and is definitely not the “chill” time she thought it would be. Which is good, because it turns out that Alyssa is not good at “chill.” https://www.rocketcrossfit.com/alyssa-s-public-speaking Inclusive Coaching Workshops: https://www.rocketcrossfit.com/inclusive-coaching-workshop Alyssa Royse - She / Her (…and not into hugs)
