Covid-19 and Climate Change – Time for a reset?

This opening session of the Earth Convention series explores the impact of the global pandemic on climate change and the environment and asks – is now the time for a reset? How has lockdown changed how we view the environment? Can we take the opportunity to turn the COVID-19 crisis into a defining moment in the fight against climate change? How can we reach for a healthier, more sustainable and greener way forward and what practical steps can we all take to create the future we want to see?

Speakers:

Christiana Figueres was the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) 2010-2016 and the public face of the most pivotal climate agreement in history, the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015. Tom Rivett-Carnac was Christiana’s political strategist at the UN. James Thornton is the founding CEO of ClientEarth. Juliet Davenport is founder and Chief Executive Officer of Good Energy. Chaired by Rosie Boycott – cross bench peer, food campaigner and co-founder 5x15.

Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac: Has climate change determined our future?

Play
Read more

Christiana Figueres is the former Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and it was her work that led to its members signing the 2015 Paris agreement.

Together with Tom Rivett-Carnac, she created Global Optimism, an organization focused on bringing about environmental and social change.

Their book, The Future We Choose (£12.99, Bonnier), reveals that we are on the precipice of two futures: one where net-zero emissions is achieved, and one where it is not, and this week they’re talking to our editorial assistant Amy Barrett about the Paris Climate Agreement, why we need to reduce carbon emissions, and how we all have a role to play in combating climate change.

In this episode we’re talking to a world leader in the climate movement, Christiana Figueres. Christiana was the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change from 2010 to 2016 and is credited with securing the Paris Agreement in 2015. She is joined by her co-author Tom Rivett-Carnac, who was her Senior Political Adviser at the UN and now works with her on a podcast called "Outrage and Optimism". Together they wrote 'The Future We Choose". *The Extinction Rebellion Podcast would like to apologise for mistakenly referring to Christiana and Tom's podcast as Global Optimism. The podcast is called "Outrage and Optimism" but can be found on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram @GlobalOptimism.* Extinction Rebellion has three demands. 1) Tell the Truth - Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change. 2) Act Now - Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025. 3) Beyond Politics - Government must create and be led by the decision of a Citizens' Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
