Covid-19 is challenging, stretching the Church. As we've discussed... the Church has responded well, but at what cost? Our newfound love of Digital Church in this season of Coronavirus has churches growing at incredible rates, but the consensus of many of our pastors and staff is that this environment, at the pace and expectation we're executing, is becoming unmanageable.

There are pending philosophy questions we need to eventually have. This is not that conversation. Let's focus on this: As Pastors, as Church Staff, how do we manage ourselves? How do we care for our souls? If the first step of leadership is leading self, then what are we doing in this season to properly care for us as we lead others? I myself have made this mistake: Covid-19 is a marathon, not a sprint. It's not going away anytime soon. How do we effectively care for ourselves in this season?

This is the question I asked Mindy Caliguire. Mindy is a former Willow Creek staffer, who has written a number of books on Soulcare, is President and Co-founder of an organization called Soul Care, who's literal purpose is to help churches/organizations answer questions like these.

This is really the heart of our podcast here. No techy stuff. No strategy. No philosophy. Let's just focus on a simple question of how can we keep pastors emotionally and spiritually healthy in this Covid-19 season.

"Over time God continued to not only heal me, but bring me to environments where I could serve this bigger conversation among others, and in particular among leaders.""I want to talk to anyone who will listen about the primacy, the deep importance, of finding a way of life that keeps the health of your soul at the forefront of your truest responsibilities.""Leaders are leading courageously and dying inside at the same time.""Of all the thing that God has challenged us to die to in the pursuit of living a life with Him, I don't think that an ever diminishing life was one of those things.""We are so prone to self-deception and when we are unhealthy we have huge resistance to God and God's love.""The deeper work of the soul is often messy, has mystery, is ugly and confusing.""God is wildly creative and personally knows both you and your entire team and will know how to meaningfully intersect that.""Leadership is all about getting as much clarity as you can about what's next and how to motivate people to go there.""If God has you at the table and in the conversation, it is your way of serving to contribute to the conversation."

Self-reliance. Narcissism. Striving. Overwhelmed. Powering up. Pushing through. These are all words sometimes used to describe leaders. Leaders on the fringe desperately need to design soul care rhythms, postures, and practices in order to lead from a different place. It is possible to learn the unforced rhythms of grace and find rest for your soul. As a spiritual formation and soul care expert, Mindy Caliguire has experienced both ways of life and has some serious practical wisdom if you want to design a life of wholeness and thriving. In this episode she talks about the difference between self-care and soul care, and what practices leaders need to be well. She identifies the #1 problem for leaders and confronts the narcissism we see in spiritual leaders today. We talk about the “Popeye arm” and what’s necessary to develop soul-saving muscles for the long game.
