Cult City: Jim Jones, Harvey Milk, and 10 Days That Shook San Francisco
The Opperman Report
In recounting the fascinating, intersecting stories of Jim Jones and Harvey Milk, Cult City tells the story of a great city gone horribly wrong.November 1978. Reverend Jim Jones, the darling of the San Francisco political establishment, orchestrates the murders and suicides of 918 people at a remote jungle outpost in South America.Days later, Harvey Milk, one of America’s first openly gay elected officials—and one of Jim Jones’s most vocal supporters—is assassinated in San Francisco’s City Hall. This horrifying sequence of events shocked the world. Almost immediately, the lives and deaths of Jim Jones and Harvey Milk became shrouded in myth. Now, forty years later, this book corrects the record. The product of a decade of research, including extensive archival work and dozens of exclusive interviews, Cult City reveals just how confused our understanding has become. In life, Jim Jones enjoyed the support of prominent politicians and Hollywood stars even as he preached atheism and communism from the pulpit; in death, he transformed into a fringe figure, a “fundamentalist Christian” and a “fascist.”In life, Harvey Milk faked hate crimes, outed friends, and falsely claimed that the US Navy dishonorably discharged him over his homosexuality; in death, he is honored in an Oscar-winning movie, with a California state holiday, and a US Navy ship named after him. His assassin, a blue-collar Democrat who often voted with Milk in support of gay issues, is remembered as a right-winger and a homophobe. But the story extends far beyond Jones and Milk. Author Daniel J. Flynn vividly portrays the strange intersection of mainstream politics and murderous extremism in 1970s San Francisco—the hangover after the high of the Summer of Love.2 years ago #10, #and, #city:, #cult, #days, #ed, #francisco, #harvey, #jim, #jones, #milk, #opperman, #report, #san, #shook, #spreaker, #that

Ep. 114: Jonestown, Jim Jones, and The People's Temple (Cult Stories / True Crime / Guyana / Commune / Compound / Kool Aid / Flavor Aid / Mass Suicide / Revolution / Communism / Death )
Leaving Eden Podcast
In what is quite possibly Leaving Eden Podcast's most requested episode ever, Sadie and Gavi discuss Jonestown, The People’s Temple, and the massacre that occurred there in November of 1978.TW: In general we talk about a lot of potentially triggering topics on this show, including but not limited to suicide and mental health, racism, misogyny, PTSD and PTSD symptoms, child abuse, mental, physical, and sexual abuse, and spiritual abuse including guilt, shame, and fear. In most episodes we’ll mention at least a few of these topics, but we try very hard to avoid graphic detail unless it’s relevant to the story we’re telling, and we do our best to give the audience a heads-up before going into detail on any of these topics. In this episode, of course we are going to be discussing many deaths by suicide, the majority of which were coerced or forced, and the death of many children, but we think that’s obvious from the episode title and the topic we’re discussing. We are also going to be talking about a lot of very twisted humiliation rituals, control and brainwashing and blackmail rituals, this goes a bit deeper than we were initially aware of. Of course we will give you a heads up before we drop any graphic details, but as usual we are going to err on the side of not glorifying abuse and letting listeners seek out the darker details if they want to. Additionally, you may be confused by or disagree with our portrayals of The People’s Temple, Jim Jones, and his followers. While obviously Jim Jones was a murderer and a controlling and abusive person, it is important to explore his positive attributes in order to explain what his followers saw in him and why they trusted him to begin with. To not do so would be to portray them as witless sheep led to slaughter which would be against the mission of this podcast and also disrespectful to the memories of those who died in 1978 as a result of the actions of Jim Jones. An extended, uncensored, and ad-free version of this podcast episode is available to subscribers at Patreon.com/LeavingEdenPodcastWE HAVE NEW MERCH AVAILABLE, AND A NEW MERCH SHOP, at https://leavingedenpodcast.threadless.comStream the Leaving Eden Podcast theme song, Rolling River of Time on Spotify!https://open.spotify.com/artist/6lB7RwSQ9X5gnt1BDNugyS?si=jVhmqFfYRSiruRxekdLgKA.Join our Facebook Discussion group!https://www.facebook.com/groups/edenexodusJoin our subreddit!Reddit.com/r/EdenExodusInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/leavingedenpodcast/https://www.instagram.com/sadiecarpentermusic/https://www.instagram.com/gavrielhacohen/Twitter:https://twitter.com/LeavingEdenPodhttps://twitter.com/HellYeahSadiehttps://twit... Jim Jones & The Jonestown Massacre
WWTF Internet Radio®™ What’s The Buzz Popcast©2022
JONESTOWNOn November 18, 1978, Peoples Temple founder Jim Jones leads hundreds of his followers in a mass murder-suicide at their agricultural commune in a remote part of the South American nation of Guyana. Many of Jones’ followers willingly ingested a poison-laced punch while others were forced to do so at gunpoint. The final death toll at Jonestown that day was 909; a third of those who perished were children.Jonestown did not turn out to be the paradise their leader had promised. Temple members worked long days in the fields and were subjected to harsh punishments if they questioned Jones’ authority. Their passports were confiscated, their letters home censored and members were encouraged to inform on one another and forced to attend lengthy, late-night meetings. Jones, by then in declining mental health and addicted to drugs, was convinced the U.S. government and others were out to destroy him. He required Temple members to participate in mock suicide drills in the middle of the night.
