Can Patriotism Save Us? David Starkey speaks at the NCF Conference

So what you're saying is...

There are no universal values or human rights, argues Dr. David Starkey at our St. George's Day conference. The West's creation of international law, and international bodies to govern an international rules based system lies at the heart of the West's current problems. The West believes all peoples and regions of this world share universal beliefs and values. They don't. Russia and China understand this. We don't. Just at The West's moment of triumph, when it saw its enemies vanquished, it finds itself in its greatest identity crisis. How did the West end up mired in the identity politics of race, gender and sexuality? Why is it losing dominance on the global stage to Russia and China, the latter a superpower created by the West via entry to the WTO.Are patriotism and pride in the values and achievements we've inherited from our ancestors enough to help restore the West? These and many other issue are discussed by Dr. David Starkey in this fascinating talk delivered at "Believe in Britain & The West", the New Culture Forum's 2022 spring conference, held, appropriately, on St. George's Day. #NCFConf22-----------------SUBSCRIBE: If you are enjoying the show, please subscribe to our channel on YouTube (click the Subscribe Button underneath the video and then Click on the Bell icon next to it to make sure you Receive All Notifications)AUDIO: If you prefer Audio you can subscribe on itunes or Soundcloud. Dr David Starkey: I Was Cancelled But I Wont Be Silenced For Speaking Objective Truth

So what you're saying is...

*EXCLUSIVE*In his first interview since being "cancelled" for a comment he made in a 2020 YouTube interview (dealing with slavery & genocide), Dr. David Starkey returns to our #SWYSI sofa to explain his remarks and discuss the storm that engulfed him in the immediate aftermath. Dr. Starkey reveals that whilst his social life was broadly unaffected, the impact on his professional life was severe. In this era of woke, when once venerable institutions can no longer be relied upon, Dr. Starkey found himself removed, dropped, ejected or forced to resign from one notable body after another -- from Fitzwilliam College & the University of Cambridge to the British Library & the Royal Historical Society -- with little recourse for appeal. He believes that the institutional elites who choose to react in such harsh ways are creating a stifling, authoritarian culture that is immensely destructive, both to academia and wider society. He draws a comparison between the experience of those who've been "cancelled" by woke extremists with the treatment traditionally meted out to heretics by religious fundamentalists.Dr. Starkey explains how the "mental adventurousism" of creativity, originality and ingenuity that underscored Britain's success and which stands as its best chance for future success against the great powers of China, India etc. cannot surive in such an environment.Dr. Starkey returns to the subect of slavery & genocide to explain what he had originally intended to say. He rejects the left's attempt to draw a comparison between the British Empire / slavery and Nazi Germany / genocide. He also attacks Black Lives Matter and rails against the victimhood culture which he believes is now endemic in the UK and the Anglosphere. He laments the current trend for assuming that America's cultural problems automatically apply also to Britain -- they don't. Britain doesn't have the race relations problems of America, yet BLM and others would have us believe there is no difference. 1: Dr David Starkey: Black Lives Matter Aims To Delegitimate British History

Reasoned Conversations with Darren Grimes

Dr David Starkey, TV historian and political commentator, takes Reasoned's Darren Grimes through the scholarship (or lack thereof) behind Black Lives Matter. Dr Starkey argues, as he did recently for The Critic Magazine, that the political movement behind Black Lives Matter (far removed from the laudable slogan), aims to delegitimate the whole of British history. As well as allowing the interview to take a personal note whilst discussing cancel culture at his alma mater, Cambridge University, Dr Starkey concludes that, despite all of the current craziness and chaos, he's optimistic for Britain's future.
