Mindfulness Manufacturing

Mindfulness Manufacturing is pleased to have Terry Iverson as a guest on our podcast today. Terry is a 3rd generation President and CEO of a family built CNC distribution business. He is also the founder of an Organization called “Champion Now and its sole purpose is to change people’s perception of manufacturing for the better. Listen as Terry shares his passion and years of experience on Mindfulness Manufacturing. 2:56 The human interface. Terry discusses the human element and how this has always been a constant.  The human interface in buying and selling components is still consistent today, 40 years later since Terry has started. 5:40 Automation and computerization. Terry talks about where he sees Manufacturing going and how manufacturing companies were not very good at marketing their companies, good at marketing their products not their companies.  They have not marketed the jobs or careers within their company very well. 8:05 Everything starts with integrity. Terry talks about never deciding based on a financial gain or loss it has always been on integrity and honesty and running a company on these virtues.  What has happened over the years there has not been as strong of a mentoring program for the younger people. 10:20 look for somebody who is a good person. Terry talks about looking for people who are good to the core and want a relationship.  People want a job but they truly want to have a relationship at their work.  There is way too much jumping around.  Terry discusses Manufacturing day and the importance of promoting this to show videos and films and invite people into the facilities.  This helps to show what todays manufacturing offers. 13:25 Show up early, stay late and tell the truth. Terry talks about the 3 things that he promotes and finds important to help the younger people in a career.  The importance of taking the time to live by these helps create a career rather than a job.  Terry talks about how he has lived these 3 virtues within his own business. 17:31 Champion now. Our special guest Terry M. Iverson is a third generation President & CEO of Iverson & Company, an 86 year-old CNC machine tool distributorship located in Des Plaines, IL. The Iverson brand has become synonymous with “precision & service”, and cutting edge in the industry and service, rebuilding, financing, training and turnkeys throughout portions of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and UP Michigan. Terry started in the industry in 1980 based out of Wisconsin, for the first 5 years of his career. During his career Terry has found it important to develop relationships with Technical Colleges in the area that Iverson & Company serves. Some of the technical/community colleges that Terry has worked with are: Milwaukee Area Technical College, Moraine Park, & Gateway Technical Colleges in Wisconsin. Ivy Tech in Indiana. Oakton Community College, Harper College and Carl Sandburg in Illinois. Iverson has also formed relationships with High Schools that are involved in STEM or Project Lead the Way such as Austin PolyTech in Chicago, Maine South in Park Ridge, Wheeling, Palatine, Shaumburg, Elk Grove High Schools in Illinois. Throughout each relationship Iverson believes that an educational partner needs to bring commitment, and concern for each other’s best interest. Terry founded the organization named ChampionNow!, which stands for Change How American Manufacturing’s Perceived in Our Nation in order to promote manufacturing careers to the youth of this country. (www.championnow.org). Terry had also mentored young men and women while coaching travel soccer for 25 years and at his church. Terry has nationally served on the CTE Foundation Board in Washington DC & presently sits & Chairs the National Visiting Committee for FL-ATE, Golden Corridor Group in Chicago, and served on the TMA Educational Foundation. He has also made industry forum presentations at annual conventions for ACTE in Charlotte, NC & Nashville, TN, as well as for the National Coalition of Advanced Technology Centers Annual Fall conference. He also recently made a presentation for MFG Manufacture for Growth annual meeting in Phoenix, AZ. Most recently Terry has keynote spoke at the Nassau County Workforce in Florida, & addressed the Small Business Committee for the House of Representatives in Washington June 2013. In October for manufacturing month, Terry spoke to both students and employers at the 2013 Wisconsin Machine Tool Show & at 2013 Close It Summit in Washington DC. He was also interviewed for a US Chamber of Commerce video for the Dr. Laz Lopez special. Terry has written articles for the November 2013 Innovation Intake magazine, as well the June 2012 issue of Manufacturing Engineering Magazine. Terry is currently working on writing a book about the evolution of his ChampionNow! experience. Terry has trademarked 2 additional terms in his effort to promote manufacturing –- Manufacturing Create$ and CNC Rocks!
