I'm finally back after an extensive pause on the podcast. I'm chatting to Dwayne Woods about PJ or Polly Jean Harvey. In this episode, we discuss life and career of PJ Harvey and also how the music scene has changed for women since the 1990s. We talk feminism, formative years and the many reinventions of Polly.

#496: To Bring You My Love by PJ Harvey

In 1995 PJ Harvey was relatively unknown in the US, aside from college radio and others tuned into the underground. Thanks to the breakout single "Down By The Water," for a brief moment she was in the same spotlight as Tori Amos, Bjork, Sarah McLachlan, Liz Phair, and other female artists who transcended the dominance of Seattle grunge and guitar rock. On To Bring You My Love, Harvey bounces between the minimalist blues of the title track and the krautrock drive of Working For The Man, and the blistering distortion of Meet Ze Monsta and pounding drive of Long Snake Moan. But in the age of Spotify skipping, can minimalism and restraint with bursts of nasty distortion still catch an ear?

Songs In This Episode:

Intro - Down By The Water

22:22 - C'mon Billy

26:09 - Long Snake Moan

34:10 - The Dancer

38:03 - Working For The Man

Outro - Meet Ze Monsta

PJ Harvey's Let England Shake / Event Horizon / Brassneck and Taylight Brewing

Ok team welcome to EP 44 of BORP! We are very excited to bring you all sorts of neat content about music, film, and beer. Mickey is speaking more and more in French lately so there is also that. Tristan discusses his various Star Wars themed socks while Mickey has some slightly more intimate swag that none of us saw coming. We try to figure out the difference between internet rap and Soundcloud rap but don't make much progress. As the pandemic wears on and the liquor stores shelves are getting a little slim Tristan and Mick went in different directions for the beer picks (6:22). Mickey went super new and indie with a black pilsner from Taylight Brewing, where as Tristan returned to his dark master Brassneck with the Employee of the Month American Pale Ale. For our album pick (26:40) we went with the harrowing Let England Shake by PJ Harvey, and examine her exquisite writing documenting England's role in the horrors of modern warfare. Things don't get any more rosy for our film pick (1:25:13) as Mickey selected the 90s sci fi horror black sheep Event Horizon- dust off those latin textbooks! For New and Noteworthy (2:10:44) we check out music by Ela Minus, Breakbot, Kari Faux, and Many Voices Speak. As we wind down with Three Questions (2:32:42) Mickey asks Tristan to predict when he thinks the next world war might start. Maybe not today, definitely not tomorrow, but maybe at some point? Episode 120 - Is This Desire? by PJ Harvey, with Vicki Henry (Side B)

It’s part two of our PJ Harvey episode, and this week we talk about her fourth album Is This Desire? in full. We get into the flow of the album, how it differs from her other work, and do our usual track by track breakdown. Weaver also drops in via voice mail to give us his thoughts. Plus we have the usual nexus shenanigans too as we look to try and connect PJ Harvey with the bloody Peperami mascot, The Animal.

So, the question we pose to you is this: Do you think Is This Desire? is the definitive unsung PJ Harvey album? Over the past two episodes we’ve discussed whether or not it’s her best, and if it’s the most well known album (it’s not). You can probably guess which way we float on this, but it’s your call so vote below.

Next week: The Dillinger Escape Plan Triple Threat.

Episode 119 - Is This Desire? by PJ Harvey, with Vicki Henry (Side A)

Chris has been deliberating on which PJ Harvey to pick since before this whole podcast even started. It was a choice so difficult, that he’s had to call in back up in friend of the pod, and resident PJ Harvey expert, Vicki Henry.

Weaver couldn’t join us in full this week due to a myriad of technical issues (seriously, we tried for like half an hour to find a work around), which further proves we’ve yet to come up with a foolproof remote recording method that takes into account women who make tarot cards, phones without headphone jacks, and decent quality mics. We are, however, closer than ever to creating the perfect remote episode. Promise.

This week, Vicki picks PJ Harvey’s fourth album Is This Desire? for your consideration. This episode turned into an absolute whopper, so we’ve broken it down into two delightfully bitesized(ish) chunks. We cover the history of PJ Harvey and a bunch of her albums to boot.

Voting comes next week. Hopefully you’ll think we’ve made a good case.

We’ve also compiled a wee PJ Harvey playlist, which is pretty great if you’re unfamiliar with her work. You can find it over at www.unsungpod.net
