Comedian Katie Haller talks with Dr. Dan Ratner

crushing doubt

On the fifth episode of Crushing Doubt, Dan interviews one of his own patients, Katie Haller, who gave her permission to tell the story of her recovery from chronic knee pain. Dr. Ratner and Katie follow her journey from the onset of her symptoms, her visits to all sorts of practitioners in many fields, including traditional medicine, all the way through to her TMS treatment. She shares the striking and difficult story she endured, but Katie is a professional comedian, so she brings a great deal of humor to the situation as well. It’s easier for her to laugh now that she has progressed so far in her pain relief. She still has symptoms flare up when something too large pops up in her emotional life, but the two continue to work these things through for her and help her grow stronger and more confident in her own abilities and safety with her symptoms. Julie and Dan also explore the ideal of individualism and how it can lead to a secret doubt in ourselves in the face of the expectations of society. The podcast closes as Julie and Dan discuss the nature of the Emotions Column in his treatment. We cover how to understand emotional life as it relates to the onset and timing of symptoms and how to ‘think emotionally’, instead of feeling stuck in the physicality of the symptoms. Dan also considers questions from the viewing and listening audience, as he does everything he can to help patients resolve their doubt, understand their emotions, grow more personally powerful, and reduce or eradicate their symptoms.

Dr. Eric Sherman talks with Dr. Dan Ratner

crushing doubt

This week, as always, we continue the journey into mind body experience, how to understand what your body is saying to you, and what you can do to get relief from your symptoms. Today’s episode has my most personal meaning yet, as my guest is Dr. Eric Sherman, a licensed clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst, who played a direct role in my recovery and the formation of my ideas about doubt, even if it was somewhat inadvertent on his part! Eric is the noted mind body co-author of Pathways to Pain Relief, with Fran Anderson, and a highly skilled therapist who studied with Dr. Sarno and the original TMS therapist, Arlene Feinblatt. Eric and I talk about the early days of Dr. Sarno and the field of mind body medicine, how he got involved, and how it changed his life. But you’ll also hear the story of how I came to see him and utilized our one meeting to answer as many of my questions as possible -- the beginning of my method for crushing doubt! Eric and I look back at that session and forward to how the field is unfolding in new and exciting ways. Eric is warm, encouraging, and calming to all around him and this, combined with his rich knowledge, allows him to be an incredibly talented force for healing and understanding. It was my pleasure to get to spend such time with him after having not been able to do so for many years.

Dr. David Schechter talks with Dr. Dan Ratner

crushing doubt

Warm greetings to you! I’m thrilled for our third episode, where we continue the journey into mind body experience, how to understand what your body is saying to you, and what you can do to get relief from your symptoms. Today our special guest is Dr. David Schechter, a family and sports medicine doctor and a seasoned expert in mind body medicine. David and I bonded not only over our experience of treating people with mind body symptoms, but over the key concept of doubt, as he is the other major contributing author to TMS literature who recognized its tremendous importance. David and I see eye to eye on so many of the central issues, which is refreshing in a field where there are enough varied opinions to drive would be recoverers into further confusion. He is a brilliant talent, full of the compassion and care with which I am so familiar encountering in the wonderful field of mind body healing.

Eddy Lindenstein talks with Dr. Dan Ratner

crushing doubt

On the second episode of Crushing Doubt, Dan interviews Eddy Lindenstein, competitive weightlifter and the host of The Mind and Fitness Podcast. Eddy and Dan share their bonds over chronic pain and their recoveries, focusing on the roadblocks and system failures that got in the way of their getting better more quickly or even having hope, at times, along the way that they would get better at all. Julie and Dan discuss the nature of doubt and how the identities we cling to for ourselves can make for a self critical response that gets in the way of self understanding and healing. The two compare notes on how to understand the way our bodies communicate with our minds to convey the ways we are hurting or suffering. After Eddy’s interview, Julie and Dan explore themes of masculinity, how to open up to others, and the power that can come with such a brave step. The podcast closes as Dan considers some frequently asked questions he encounters in trying to help patients resolve their doubt, understand their emotions, and reduce or eradicate their symptoms.
