Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage / Head Hunters (DOUBLE FEATURE)

The Album Concept Hour

It's episode 75 and we have a double feature for you guys! We've danced around jazz music up to this point, as it is an influence on many other music genres, but today we're finally diving in to jazz proper. Since there were so few tracks on these albums (and because jazz music is a little harder to discuss), we decided to do our first double feature for an artist. First we have Hancock's 1965 album "Maiden Voyage", which is very much what you'd expect when throwing on jazz, which is in this case considered "modal jazz". Considering Hancock was only 24 at the time, this album was extraordinarily sophisticated. Coming off the heels of playing with Miles Davis, he employed some amazing jazz legends to help him make his mark, with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor sax, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums. These songs became so big that a few of them are still standards for jazz bands today. But Hancock wasn't one to dwell on the past. His time with Miles Davis taught him that he needed to constantly push and reinvent himself. Eight years later, with the release of "Head Hunters" he did just that by making a fusion of jazz and funk, and changed the whole jazz game in the process. This brought him out of the purely jazz scene, which was fading from relevance, and into a fresh, new world where the youth were picking up on his music and loving every second of it. This album is astounding start to finish and there's a reason that it is so highly regarded by critics and hipsters alike: It slaps. With the regular crew, Brad, Jon, Dave, and Jake Foster!!!
