This week we have the privilege of interviewing Dr. Spencer Nadolsky, a licensed, practicing board-certified family physician and "memeologist." He is known for his cheeky yet provocative social media presence, which uniquely pairs mainstream health and fitness claims with evidence-based guidance. Dr. Nadolsky graciously sat down with us to discuss the challenges with social media in the health and fitness realm, providing a valuable perspective from a physician who not only studies it but lives it himself.
Dr. Nadolsky specializes in bariatric care and lipidology, so Erin and Michael took this opportunity to get a bit deeper into the science of metabolic health, dietary fat and cholesterol and how this translates to a healthful eating pattern that is sustainable. Dr. Spencer Nadolsky specializes in weight loss without the fads or hacks. Spencer is a licensed practicing family and obesity physician. After a successful wrestling career at the University of North Carolina, Spencer got his medical degree and currently focuses on helping people lose weight while maintaining a very popular social media presence.
In this episode Spencer tells Anna about his practice and where he sees his job growing in the future. He explains why people feel like they have a hard time losing weight if they have thyroid issues and why he thinks it's good to build muscle if you want to lose weight and keep it off.

Pity our poor thyroid.
This small gland is blamed for countless weight loss frustrations and is a consistent scapegoat for people who encounter fat loss plateaus.
And that’s understandable. The thyroid affects metabolism and hypothyroidism (suppressed thyroid function) can slow the basal metabolic rate and reduce fat loss if you don’t adjust your diet or get treated.
I hear from many people who have thyroid issues asking for advice on how to lose weight, how to adjust their diets, and how to improve their overall health. This isn’t a subject I’ve touched on directly, so I decided to bring on a true thyroid expert, Dr. Spencer Nadolsky, to elucidate this little gland’s function and how it relates to fitness and health.
