November 19th, 2020 - Dr. Peter Nelson (Alzheimer's and dementia research)

Behind the Blue

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 19, 2020) – The statistics on Alzheimer’s and dementia inducing brain disease are frightening to look at, and unlike research into cancer and heart disease, researchers have often been frustrated in their efforts to make progress in understanding these diseases. Dr. Peter Nelson, of the University of Kentucky’s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, has spent the last 15 years in the Commonwealth helping to lead the fight against Alzheimer’s and dementia inducing brain disease. “Clinical trials are where we’re going to make the difference in Alzheimer’s disease and dementia research,” says Nelson. “My colleagues who do the clinical trials do the most clinical trials of anybody in the country. More than Harvard, more than Stanford, more than U. Chicago, the very best in the world. So, if people want to be involved in clinical trial research, this is the place they go.” On this episode of Behind the Blue, UKPR’s Carl Nathe talks with Nelson about the work of the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, the strategies involved in working with such a complex set of diseases, the personal experience that drives his efforts in this research, and more. "Behind the Blue" is available on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher and Spotify. Become a subscriber to receive new episodes of “Behind the Blue” each week. UK’s latest medical breakthroughs, research, artists and writers will be featured, along with the most important news impacting the university. Bill Moyers talks with Peter Nelson about his film The Pollinators

Moyers on Democracy

You only need to see this film if you eat food. The Pollinators is a cinematic journey around the United States following migratory beekeepers and their truckloads of honey bees as they pollinate the flowers that become the fruits, nuts and vegetables we all eat. The many challenges the beekeepers and their bees face en route reveal flaws to our simplified chemically dependent agriculture system. We talk to farmers, scientists, chefs and academics along the way to give a broad perspective about the threats to honey bees, what it means to our food security and how we can improve it.

Peter Nelson Is a Douche

The Kirk Minihane Show

Erika Nardini and Dave Portnoy both dropped podcasts sharing their side of the Call Her Daddy dispute and one thing is clear: Peter Nelson is a gigantic douche -- the douchiest douche to ever douche. Kirk had a phone call with Boston Globe managing director Linda Pizzuti about the latest suspect Kevin Cullen column (0:26:00). The much-ballyhooed final episodes of The Last Dance did not live up to the hype (0:48:28). Ben Smith's New York Times column questioning the work of #MeToo journalist Ronan Farrow was unsatisfying, but still raised serious questions about Farrow's sloppiness (1:06:48). Kenny Bania really wants you to follow him on Twitter.

Peter Nelson on the migrating bees and their role in feeding America

Worlds in Transition - Världar i Omställning

Peter Nelson is a filmmaker from the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. He grew up as a ‘free-range kid', always out in nature following the life of the birds and the insects. This eventually led him to become a backyard beekeeper. In the movie ‘The Pollinators’ he wanted to combine his love for food, nature and filmmaking skills to tell the story of the migrating beekeepers and their honeybees. In our conversation, we discuss the making of the movie and about the annual transportation of millions of beehives in and out of fruit, nut and vegetable fields on a tight schedule to ensure pollination on a massive scale. We also talk about how people can become involved to and support the practices and initiatives needed to reverse the detrimental effects that modern agriculture has on the health of these honey producing pollinators.
