We explore outcome versus process-orientated goals and teach you how to redirect your focus away from an outcome-focused goal such as a race. We discuss the importance of reprioritising your time to focus on a new goal specific to you, such as fat adaptation, hormonal balancing, strength training, yoga, mindset training, training specific tracking measures and so much more.

#130: Katee Pedicini on Vulnerability, Mental Health & Embrace the Dichotomy

[TW/CN: this post and episode discuss suicide]

One of our most popular guests, Katee Pedicini, returns to Sparta Chicks Radio this week.

Yet this is a very different conversation from our previous episodes.

This time, Katee shares the story of her mental health journey over the last 20 years.

In her 20s, Katee was (finally) diagnosed with a condition called Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder (or PMDD).

Katee describes PMDD as extreme PMS “wrapped up with anxiety, depression, sometimes psychosis and suicidality or suicidal tendencies”

We begin this conversation with Katee’s story. Her experience of the symptoms of PMDD, including suicidal ideation.

Then we transition into a broader conversation about suicide and mental health; why suicide is often still seen as a ‘taboo’ and what Katee believes needs to change to enable it to be discussed more openly, and with less shame.

Finally, we step back and discuss the intersection between mental health and endurance sports.

This was an extremely difficult conversation, for both of us. I’m in awe of Katee’s bravery and vulnerability.

If you or someone you know needs help, in Australia you can contact Lifeline 24 hours per day on 13 11 14. Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636 or the Black Dog Institute.

#095: Katee Pedicini on Recovery, Rejuvenation & Happy Hormones

Play
Read more

Katee Pedicini’s work around hormones and their impact on our health, happiness and performance has been pivotal for many women, myself included.

Katee is the founder of Holistic Endurance and is based in Melbourne. She’s a triathlon coach and self-confessed hormone nerd who specialises in managing fatigue, stress and hormones to achieve not only performance but optimal health and happiness.

And I can hand-on-heart say Katee and her work has changed my life.

Katee has been on the podcast in both 2017 and 2018.

And if you haven’t listened to either conversation (or perhaps you haven’t heard them recently) I’d encourage you to go back and listen to them first as this episode is the 3rd part of a series, and the first 2 conversations will lay the foundations for what we talk about today.

(You can find the previous episodes here and here).

This time, we dive into the importance of recovery and rejuvenation.

Now on the face of it, it may not seem a ‘sexy’ topic. But the importance of this can’t be understated.

You can’t have performance improvements - you can’t get fitter, faster or stronger - without recovery and rejuvenation.

And you certainly can’t have happy hormones, weight, mood and energy balance without it.

Katee has also developed a Rejuvenation Protocol  - which she shares in this conversation - which allows you to track and quantify, via a point score system, your recovery and rejuvenation (and give yourself some bragging rights in the process).

Play

The 2nd most popular episode of Sparta Chicks Radio in 2018 was Katee Pedicini on structuring your training for hormonal health.

Kate Pedicini has a degree in Exercise Science who specialises in managing fatigue, stress and hormones in endurance athletes to achieve not only athletic performance but optimal health and happiness.

Kate first appeared on the podcast in 2017.

In May 2018 she returned and we dived deeply into two specific issues concerning women’s hormones and health;

- peri-menopause and menopause (and how they impact on your athletic ability, strength, training and racing) and

- why you should take advantage of your natural cycle by structuring your training program around it.

The more I speak with Katee, the more I learn and the more I wish I’d been exposed to this knowledge in my 20s and 30s.

From the Vault - Katee Pedicini on Hormones, Happiness and Health

Play

If there is one complaint I hear from women more than any other, it is their frustration about not losing weight despite the hours and hours of training involved with endurance sports (or worse, that they’ve put weight on!).

So I wanted to call in an expert for Sparta Chicks Radio this week to explain why this happens — and, most importantly, what you can do to change it.

Katee Pedicini runs Holistic Endurance in Melbourne, Australia.

She’s a triathlon coach with a degree in Exercise Science who specialises in managing fatigue, stress and hormones in endurance athletes.

But this isn’t only a conversation about weight.

It’s a conversation about your health and the widespread impact stress has on your body.

From your risk of injury and illness, the results you get (or don’t get) from your training, how quickly you recover from hard training sessions, how tired you feel, whether you hit the wall at 3pm and have to reach for coffee/chocolate/sugar, you feel like you're constantly on a short fuse to whether you need a glass of wine at the end of a busy day to wind down.

These are all factors that are influenced by the amount of stress in your life and the hormonal response your body has to that stress.
