RUN

In this run segment, we talk about a virtual race challenge we finished this week.  We grew up in the ’80s, and we love so many movies from that decade.  So when the Virtual Pace Series website introduced the Top Gun Challenge, and we saw the medal, we knew we had to do it.   We recap our Half Marathon and the completion of our challenge this week.

EAT

We have been cooking from The Healthspan Solution by Ray Cronise and Julieanna Hever.    This week it is time to hear the second part of their interview.  Ray and Julieanna were so generous with their time. In this portion of our talk with them, they gave us such great information about the foundation of their book and how they got started in the field of plant-based eating and why it helps people “add life to their years.”  Their book has great recipes that are plant-based and flavorful!  And you can absolutely add protein while increasing the nutrient-dense content in your meals without sacrificing flavor.

You can get the hardback version of the book here or the Kindle version by clicking here.

And if you want to hear more from Ray and Julieanna, check out their podcast, Science and Saucery.

DRINK

We are gearing up for part 2 of #southcapetakeoutweekend2020 ! It is hosted to support local restaurants and breweries to showcase their contactless curbside and delivery options.  We wanted to support them and help keep them going while following all safety protocols so that when we come through this, there are still the great places we know and love locally that we can explore and indulge.

One local that we want to feature this week is Narrative Coffee Roasters.  Although not part of the takeout weekend, owners, Caleb and Megan MacPherson, are doing local contactless delivering of outstanding coffee from Naples to Punta Gorda.  The coffee is thoughtfully selected and roasted.  Caleb drops some great coffee knowledge on us this week.  You can get his great coffee locally, or you can go to the website and have whole-bean or ground coffee delivered anywhere in the US!  Thanks, Caleb!  It was a great time!

THAT’S A WRAP!

Next week, we would have been at Walt Disney World, running the Star Wars Rival Run Challenge and completing the Kessel Run Challenge.  We know many of you may be feeling the #fomo, too!  We want to bring some RunDisney home!  Share a RunDisney memory with us so we can make it a bit easier for everyone in the Runcation Nation!  Our email is info@runeatdrink.net. Or you can call 941- 677-2733.  Leave us a 1-minute message letting us know your favorite and even places you celebrated at Disney after the running was done!

Thank you for listening! We are looking forward to another great year of the podcast because of all your support! Don’t forget to follow us and let us know where to find you next on our website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.  Also, check out our store on the website and get some swag, thanks to Pure Creative Apparel. In this run segment, we talk about a virtual race challenge we are starting this week.  We grew up in the 80’s and we love so many movies from that decade.  So when the Virtual Pace Series website introduced the Top Gun Challenge, and we saw the medal, we knew we had to do it.  While you can complete a 5k, 10k, or half, they offer the challenge of completing all three.  It is a great bib and a great medal, so we decided to do all three distances, and we started this week with the 5k, while reminiscing about classic scenes from this 1980’s hit and listening to its soundtrack during the run from Apple Music.

One such offering is the Southern Tier Nitro Hot Cocoa Imperial Milk Stout at 10% ABV.  With chocolate and marshmallow flavors, it could be a dessert by itself!

THAT’S A WRAP!

Ray Cronise: Control Your Metabolism & Live Forever

Ray is a smart and passionate man, who seems to be aging in reverse!

I was first introduced to the work Ray was doing a few years back on the Rich Roll Podcast (episode 212) and then again with Julieanna Hever (episode 345).

I guess I was a little late to the game, as Ray has been in the world of metabolic research and longevity for quite some time. He's written some really insightful papers (linked below) and he's got some new books in the pipeline as well!

I was excited to pick Ray's brain in what turned out to be the longest episode to date on the Alter Your Health podcast... and, we barely scratched the surface of what I wanted to cover. I hope Ray comes back for round 2.

Some highlights include...

  • Ray's own health journey and how he lost 50 pounds through cold stress
  • Why eating a small portion of fish would exacerbate his insulin resistance
  • What metabolism actually is, and how to measure it (along with brief video presentation by Ray)
  • How the food triangle helps us better understand how to relate with food as fuel
  • Why we need to forget about the words protein, carbs, and fats along with breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • The one scientifically proven way to extend life through nutrition
  • How a WFPB diet allows us to naturally restrict calories while maintaining optimal nutritional status

Plant Based Nutrition for Performers with Ray Cronise and Julieanna Hever

Play

As a performer, your lifestyle is not the same as the average person's daily 9-to-5 routine. You're up late, you have busy rehearsal schedules, you eat when you can because despite whatever is happening in your life the show must go on!

So when I had the chance to speak with Julieanna Hever and Ray Cronise i was thanking my lucky stars. Their approach to nutrition is saving lives - just ask Penn Jillette or Kevin Smith.

Julieanna and Ray wrote "The Idiot's Guide to Plant Based Nutrition." The book goes deep into the science of nutrition but also has super-handy summaries at the end of each chapter with a list of "The Least you need to know."

The book has everything from how to equip your kitchen, ( I loved the bit about handy utensils) to a chapter on the plant-based pregnancy. Julieanna Hever completed her bachelors of arts degree in Theatre from UCLA and then went on to do a masters of science degree in Nutrition from Cal State Northridge, thus bridging her three biggest passions for life food, performing, and helping people.

Ray Cronise is a former NASA scientist currently focused on disrupting diet and nutrition advice. He helped Penn Jillette, and Kevin Smith recover from near-death experiences and has helped thousands of others regain the youthful vitality that comes with proper nutrition.

Dr. Rhonda Patrick speaks with Ray Cronise, a former NASA material scientist and cofounder of zero gravity, a company that offers weightless parabolic flights to consumers and researchers. In this episode, coming at the tail end of a rather extreme 23-day water fast for Ray, we discuss, perhaps unsurprisingly, some of the benefits that are associated with fasting! Ray talks about shifting one's perspective from looking at nutrition only through the lens of meeting day-to-day nutritional needs, and instead, also considering optimizing metabolism for longer-term effects as well, the importance of thinking about longevity in the context of functional healthspan, some of the similarities between the body’s physiological response to heat stress, cold stress, and exercise and so much more.

Learn more about Ray Cronise by visiting his website at hypothermics.com (raycronise.com) or by saying hello on twitter: twitter.com/raycronise.

Finally, Ray also has a book available for pre-order called "Our Broken Plate."
