#451: Money Mindset Must-Haves For Every Entrepreneur With Anthony O'Neal
Online Marketing Made Easy with Amy Porterfield
Why your income potential has everything to do with your mindset Question for you, friend. When you first started your business, what made you most excited? Let me guess -- building something incredible, having the opportunity to help others and give back, and being your own boss topped the list. And while I’m sure making a ton of money was also on that list, I’d hedge a bet that creating budgets was not. I can’t say I know too many online marketing entrepreneurs that get excited about the money management aspect of creating wealth -- because let’s be real, it can be intimidating and very tricky, especially when you have no idea where to start. But here’s the thing. It’s incredibly important, and proper management of your money can make or break your business. That’s why I’m so excited for you to listen to this episode, where I chat with Anthony O’Neal -- a number one national bestselling author, speaker, financial expert, and host of the popular YouTube series and The Table Podcast with Anthony O’Neal. What’s great about Anthony is that he’s able to explain things in a way that is super relatable and easy to understand for those of us (ahem, yours truly) that don’t particularly enjoy putting together budgets and spreadsheets. In this episode, we answer those questions that most business owners have when they’re getting started, like: How do you budget when your monthly income varies? How do you set revenue goals that are in alignment with your business goals? When should you start paying yourself, and how much? What happens when you don’t meet your revenue goals? Plus, Anthony shares how changing your mindset around money serves as the foundation for creating financial growth and freedom, plus simple tips on how to put it into practice. Here’s a glance at this episode... [06:30] Anthony knew nothing about finances and racked up tons of college debt. He decided that he needed to change his decisions in order to change his future. Dave Ramsey helped him change his mindset around money, and learn how to have a debt-free true ownership life. [11:00] If you’re first starting out in business, create vision of where you're going with your money that’s based on your last quarter. Your budget should be based off of the bare minimum that you'll be bringing in. [13:40] It’s important to have a budget for your personal life and a budget for your business life. [14:32] You always want to pay yourself something from your business. Have a CPA assess the proper payment. Usually, the minimum is 20 to 30% of what you're collecting. [21:10] You should not feel guilty for having money. It's a blessing to be blessed. [27:03] If you want to meet your revenue goals, shift your money mindset. Go deeper into your ‘why.’ What are you actually trying to do? Does your ‘why’ make you cry (in a good way)? [36:51] Everyone eventually needs a financial advisor. As your income grows, your need for wisdom grows. Grow with someone who can properly advise you. [40:05] The number one money mistake people make is not having a vision. The number two mistake is living above their means, and the number three mistake is not investing that money. Create a monthly margin to add to your investments and savings. [42:41] The best piece of money advice that Anthony has received is that for every dollar brought in, give God ten cents. This is about being generous and a good steward of money. Rock Your Money, Rock Your Life
Is all debt bad debt? Some people say debt is good, especially when you leverage other people’s money to purchase real estate and other cash-flowing assets. Others say that any type of debt is the worst thing you can have! The thing is, only those who weren’t taught how to respect and utilize debt to their advantage end up getting trapped by it. Anthony O'Neal grew up with a strong spiritual background and a loving family who taught him about the Christian faith and how to live life following the law. The problem? They never taught him how to deal with money, debt, and finances. Before he knew it, at 19 years old, he dropped out of college, with over $25k debt, living in the back of his car. After 6 months of living like this, he said enough is enough and decided to create a life he was excited about.Today, Anthony is a #1 national bestselling author, speaker, financial expert, and host of the popular YouTube series and podcast The Table with Anthony ONeal. He’s passionate about reaching people in a real, relatable, and relevant way and helping them get a clear vision for their future so they can win the money game and live a better life. In this episode of the Rock Your Money Rock Your Life, Anthony and I discuss how he fell into the trap of “free money,” why it was only when he took responsibility for his actions that his life began to change, and how he helps people get through life and college debt-free.
In today’s episode, our guest is Anthony O’Neil. He is the national bestselling author of The Graduate Survival Guide: 5 Mistakes You Can’t Afford to Make in College and travels the country spreading his encouraging message to help teens and young adults transition into the real world. He is also a financial expert and a host of a new podcast called The Table. [8:32] Why should we listen to you? I grew up with four parents. I have two biological parents and two step-parents who raised and loved me just as much as my biological parents. I come from a life perspective, not as an expert nor preacher when I talk to you. I’m going to come from a real relevant and relatable perspective. [11:08] Where did you get the skills you work with? It took me a long time to figure it out. It was when my truck started traveling around the world. Then I started teaching young people how to go to school without racking up student loan debt. And then my mentor Dave Ramsey recruited me. [12:18] Do you find that sometimes it takes an extra level to be confident and teach someone? I think it’s where I tend to attract and where I tend to go. This generation is looking for authentic, relatable, and relevant content. I just got to force myself into that world into their culture. And once they understand what I’m saying, then that’s it. [13:21] What have been some of the most impactful groups or organizations that you’ve talked to? I had the opportunity to speak for NFL and NBA teams and go in there to help out with their rookies every year. I sit down with these rookies and mentor them. When I sit down with him, I say things that he needs to do. [16:16] How do I get people out into financial freedom to have freedom of life? You got to have a why and if your why doesn’t make you cry, then the price of commitment, the cost to accomplish the goals and dreams that you want, will make you cry. It starts with the internal why. When your why makes you cry, then the price of commitment won’t make you cry, and you will push through anything and accomplish everything you desire. [18:44] How does somebody get out of debt? Stop borrowing money. If you want to get out of debt, stop racking up debt, bottom line. I had to be patient and not worry about trying to blend in with the world. Use the Debt Snowball method; when you’re paying off all your debt, on all your debt from smallest to largest, make all your minimum payments. But then when you’re getting your extra income, and if you do a budget, and you cut out some additional expenses, all that extra income, you’re going to put it on the very first one, why are you making your minimum payments on the others. [20:46] When you get done with the first one, take all of that money and put it on the second one. It’s an efficient way to get out of debt. And when you do this debt snowball method, it’s all about momentum. It’s not about math. It’s not about getting creative knows about when you see yourself paying off the first one, get to the second one, get to the third one. You saw your future change, and you keep moving. [21:47] What kind of indirect message passes the question of why they should go and start doing something? I’m always trying to go back to myself and teach from within myself. When you start avoiding debt, make sure you have an emergency fund. Once you have that emergency fund, take advantage of all the Roth plans out there. Be creative. Go out there and buy your plot of land and just let it sit there put it into the trust for your kids down the road. [25:27] What should be the amount of money for an emergency fund? If you’re in a stable situation, three months of your average expenses. The bare minimum that I teach is three to six months of your expenses if you’re in a commission-based job. It all depends on your situation. [29:09] What promise did God make to the world when He created you? You can get an authentic, relevant, and relatable conversation. You’re not going to have an expert. You’re going to have a person who is a student first and foremost, who loves God and who’s going to be genuine, and who genuinely wants to see you win.
