En 1779, el joven Charles Simeon ingresó a Cambridge. Luego de ser ordenado al ministerio, fue desestimado como ministro de la Iglesia de la Santísima Trinidad por su estilo de predicación evangélica.
Pero no se detuvo y empezó a predicar en los pasillos. Cuando Simeon quiso reunirse con sus estudiantes en el templo, los guardias de la iglesia los echaron del edificio. Pero lentamente el grupo de estudiantes que venía a escuchar a Charles fue creciendo.
Entonces Simeon hizo lo que era impensable en ese momento: inició un servicio nocturno. Invitó a los estudiantes a su casa los domingos y el viernes por la noche para enseñarles cómo predicar. Para cuando él murió, se estima que un tercio de todos los ministros anglicanos en el país se habían sentado bajo su enseñanza. Simeon inspiró a muchos jóvenes de la iglesia a llevar el evangelio a los rincones más remotos del mundo.
Hoy es un modelo de predicador, admirado por importantes figuras como John Stott.
