Ahmet Kuru: Erdoğan seeks rents in Kanal Istanbul, but Rentierism has no future
Mustafa Gürbüz, a sociologist at the American University and host of the House of Wisdom podcast for Ahval, interviewed Ahmet T. Kuru, professor of political science at San Diego State University.Kuru explained how Turkey has become an example of a state allied with the ulema, Islam’s scholar class, despite still being a constitutionally secular state under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.The professor also said the Turkish government’s attitude towards 2013’s nationwide Gezi Park protests and Erdoğan’s current Kanal Istanbul artificial waterway project are examples of rent seeking, despite Turkey being an oil-poor country.

Ahmet T. Kuru (PhD, University of Washington) is a Professor of Political Science at San Diego State University. His recent book, "Islam, Authoritarianism, and Underdevelopment: A Global and Historical Comparison" (2019) aims to offer a fresh perspective as to why Muslim-majority countries exhibit high levels of authoritarianism and low levels of socio-economic development in comparison to world averages. Colonialism? Religion? War? Most answers to this question have tended to see things from these lens; while Dr. Kuru pins it on what he calls an "ulema-state alliance". The discussion centers on these main ideas from his book. This was a prerecorded episode. *GUEST'S LINKS* Website: https://politicalscience.sdsu.edu/people/faculty/kuru_a.html Twitter: https://twitter.com/prof_ahmetkuru FOLLOW/SUPPORT HOD @ https://linktr.ee/delvento
