Episode 116: Powderkeg, Matt Hunckler

Drink Culture Podcast

There’s another Hunckler building community in Indianapolis? This week we chat with Matt Hunckler about the entrepreneurial career that led him to accidentally start Powderkeg. Matt, brother to alumni Josie Hunckler of Rabble Coffee, spent his youth designing buildings, desirous of being an architect. While visiting friends at IU during his freshman year at Purdue, Matt would drop-in to the #1 rated entrepreneurship school in the country where he learned how concepts like accounting and finance were the building blocks of a business. As you might expect, Matt transferred to IU, where he started his first business after listening to alumni Scott Hill's presentation about his experience as an entrepreneur. After graduation and while in the Orr Fellowship, he started a group called Verge for entrepreneurs in the tech space to get feedback on their projects. It wasn’t his intention for it to grow, but it’s now a comprehensive, curated platform to connect the right people to the right culture in tech. Specifically, in areas that do not have a dense population of talent. Take a sip of your Hotel Tango whiskey as we learn about how vital culture match is to employee retention, about the growing tech community and industry, and the struggles of growing a lifestyle business. We even have a special, uninvited guest who tunes in. Drink deep of the culture that surrounds you this week with Matt Hunckler of Powderkeg. Matt Hunckler: Threads Startups Together Through Verge HQ

Launchpad: A Show About the Entrepreneur's Journey

Matt Hunckler Episode Information Matt Hunckler is no stranger to being an entrepreneur. He started off his journey as a DJ and progressed towards digitizing old media, so it’s no surprise he runs one of the most successful startup communities in the second tier startup cities with Verge HQ. After building up a successful web design business through outsourcing and learning about the right way and wrong way to sell a business, Matt would go on to be at the forefront of an industry that would soon explode. Unfortunately, when he and his partner started their Birch Box style business, it was right before the tech explosion that would help launch companies doing the exact same thing to prominence. Sometimes being one of the first doesn’t equal success. Find out how Matt feels being so close to something that would later explode and bring in big investors and whether he would rather have continued down that path knowing what he knows now. Deciding to shutter a promising company, Verge was created to help bring together a community of entrepreneurs that, until now, had no real place to connect in a city that was on the verge of a startup boom. Since creating Verge, Matt Hunckler has become an expert on the art of the dreaded Pitch. Using his THREAD method, he has helped hone the pitches of several entrepreneurs and created an environment to allow them to thrive in the Venture Capital (VC) world. The THREAD method can be described as: TARGET: Target your vision and who you are approaching HOOK: Hook the audiences’ attention RAPPORT: Build a connection with your audience ESCALATION: Begin to stack the pieces of your business and really deliver the hook ASK: Ask the Venture Capital firm to invest Pro Tips #1: Be Specific About Your Ask How Much What Valuation What Purpose Pro Tip #2: Shut Up Oftentimes people don’t know when to stop talking and give the VC a chance to sense weakness or find a problem with your company. DROP ANCHOR: Leave something behind that creates an emotional connection to your pitch. The post Matt Hunckler: Threads Startups Together Through Verge HQ appeared first on Launchpad.

Community as Launch Pad (with Matt Hunckler, founder of Vergehq.com)

The Intrepid Entrepreneur

Very few entrepreneurs in the world can say that they started their first business when they were a wee young lad – for Matt Hunckler, founder of Verge, he started his first business in high school! First, a bit about Vergehq.com. It’s basically Silicon Valley’s neighbor to the East, er – Midwest. More specifically, Verge is the largest platform in the Midwest for software entrepreneurs, developers and business investors. It’s growing like wildfire! There are over 3,000 active members in many cities and Matt has his sites set on more than doubling the cities that are still “unlocked” in terms of having Verge presences. Okay, back to Matt. So that high-school business? It gave Matt the Fever BIG TIME – the fever to be an entrepreneur that is. Not bad for a guy who started his post-college career selling vacuums door-to-door. Verge is actually Matt’s third start up, and he’s still quite young (you’d never guess he has three start ups under his belt, look at his picture!). Listen in today to learn about what motivates Matt and how he's building an amazing tribe in Verge. Don't forget to subscribe and rate The Intrepid Entrepreneur on iTunes! Also, make sure to visit www.livinguber.com to learn more about the show and Kristin herself.
