Kelly Walker on Celebrating Life with Grace and Delight Because It’s Good to Be Alive
Think Queerly Podcast
“The grace to live with an inner sense of delight.”I am pleased to share this intimate discussion with my cousin, Kelly Walker. If ever there were a person to speak with about the fragile but necessarily formative transitions that happen in our lives, that require both trust and love of the self and others, it is Kelly.Kelly and I share a purpose in life; helping liberate people and transforming institutions. In our discussion, Kelly shares the wisdom of living life as a celebration. At 79, he is living as a happy elder who accepts himself as (his words) both ‘old’ and ‘older.’ We look back at his rich life and experiences, including,Facing the possibility of death and surviving cancer, twice; His 20 years spent in a Dominican monastery and acting as Prior across Canada;Experiencing severe burnout to the extent his doctors told him he would have to leave the priesthood if he wanted to live; How we came to know we are related and our intergenerational friendship of almost 45 years;Getting straight-married after leaving the Dominicans, coming out, and then getting gay-married;His life-long sense of delight in life, living, and celebration;Being 79, sexually interesting, interested, and always exploring new ways to play at life, and;The three conversions we need to make as humans if we are to survive and thrive as a species.“I’ve got more depth to me because I almost died, again.”Read Kelly’s full bio in the expanded show notes here.
Kelly Walker is an Australian multi-hyphenate award winning filmmaker. She’s had multiple short films in the festival circuit, most notably The Brownlist, directed and edited by Walker, which received the Jury Award for Best Short Film at Bentonville Film Festival. We chatted with Kelly about her debut feature, My Fiona. She was invited to participate in Australian’s In Film’s Writers Lab for her script and completed shooting the film in the summer 2019. My Fiona was set to world premiere at BFI Flare in London in March 2020, but due to Covid-19 the premiere was cancelled. Links My Fiona Kelly Walker
The WNBA’s tribute and dedication of their season to Brianna Taylor is a powerful symbol of a call for justice. Overall, the message which athletes are attempting to deliver is consequential. Meanwhile, the need to grow girl’s participation in sports remains a high priority as we attempt to diversify women’s sports. Furthermore, baseball could be in jeopardy, after 12 Miami Marlins players tested positive for Covid-19 and the NFL looks for a path to keep there players safe from the virus, as training camps are set to start, and a trickle of players are opting out for safety concerns. Kelly Walker covers local pro sports teams for LifestyleFrisco.com and enjoy learning and talking about baseball soccer, basketball, football, lacrosse, cheer, and anything having to do with competition and an athlete or coach's journey. She’s also a parent of 2 athletes, the wife of a rec athlete, and still plays some sports herself, even in her 40s, when she isn’t at the fields with the kids. She joined me this week to tackle some of the hot button issues in the sports world. You can follow Kelly on Twitter @kelly_walker_TX. 22. Asatta learns about Drugs! (with Kelly Walker, RN)
What Makes Me Well with Asatta Jones
“wait a minute…I think I might have done speed!”Hey hey Wellness Warriors, I’m back after my lil breaky break with an episode that I had so much fun recording! I sat down with my longtime friend and Registered Psychiatric Nurse, Kelly Walker and learned all about Drugs. Okay, not all about drugs but we dip our feet in the pool of drug knowledge… from a medical standpoint. We talk about all types of drugs and what they do to the body, the importance of being honest with your healthcare professional and I ask all kinds of stupid questions because admittedly ya’ll, I’m very ignorant in this department. Also I discover that I might have taken speed when I was younger. …so yeah, it’s a fun episode!Mentioned in this episode:Lehne’s Pharmacology for Nursing CareNational Institute on Drug Abuse for TeensNeed advice? Episode 16 is a double banger walking us down the star-aligned path of friendship between artists Inbar Lavi (Imposters, Lucifer) and Kelly Walker (My Fiona, Swamp Thing). Respectively hailing from Israel and Australia, these two ladies grew up worlds apart, but upon meeting they realized they had far more in common than first meets the eye. Their friendship has continued to thrive in support of each other’s artistic endeavors, serving as mirrors for one another - sometimes challenging, but always with the common goal of emboldening their highest selves and holding each other accountable to continue to reach for their dreams. In a city where these kinds of relationships aren’t always easy to come by, listening to them speak about their experiences thus far, both unique and similar, reminds us that love is expansive and comes in many different forms.
