LawFlip Episode 030 | Mandana Dayani

Right now is arguably the darkest moment in modern American history. Our national morale sinks to new lows on an almost-daily basis amidst an ever-worsening pandemic, troubling levels of police brutality, and increasing civil unrest. However, even amidst these dark times, we are also experiencing tremendous positive changes - like diverse communities coming together and supporting marginalized voices.

So how can we move forward and solidify positive change? Vote!

Today’s @LawFlip guest, Mandana Dayani (@mandanadayani), an entrepreneur, attorney and social activist who could probably have just about any job she wants. She’s had high profile positions in fashion, entertainment, and technology (including a major role in Rachel Zoe’s fashion brand).

But, right now, she is obsessed with bringing awareness to America’s most fundamental freedom:  The right to vote!

Mandana co-founded I am a voter.® It is a nonpartisan movement that aims to create a cultural shift around voting and civic engagement by unifying people around a central truth:  Our democracy works best when we all participate.

We discuss her new podcast Dissenters (named in homage to Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s use of the line, “I dissent”) which she co-hosts with actor, philanthropist and global icon Debra Messing. Their podcast, for now, is a series that focuses on 20 individuals who challenged the status quo including Hilary Clinton, Adam Schiff and many other of their heroes.

Benjy and Mandana also discuss how anger is motivating, and how even the “smartest” people in the room often have no idea what they are doing (meaning that there’s no reason for you not to be in the room regardless of whether you feel like you belong). Benjy and Mandana close out the episode with their Deals and Legal Tips of the Week.

Mandana Dayani, founder of the nonpartisan "I am a voter" movement, stops by Catt's bedroom and takes off a particularly meaningful piece of jewelry; her "voter" necklace. The "I am a voter" campaign is intended to encourage ALL people not only to vote, but become active, engaged participants in their communities.

But Mandana's come a long way, and in this interview, she shares what it was like to immigrate to the U.S. from Iran; how she underwent a career shift from law, to working with Rachel Zoe; and why she always wanted to be a congresswoman. She also discusses how having a daughter has impacted the way she views politics, and why, for the first time in her life, she has no plan for the future.

And, this week, Catt talks about her ongoing struggle to publish a book -- and why she needs to stop overthinking and start writing.
