Erin Rae: On Growing Up in the South, Sexuality, Racial Injustice and Childhood Memories

Connected Sounds

Today's guest on 'Connected Sounds' is Erin Rae - a Nashville indie folk singer-songwriter gifted with a unique ability to fuse musical genres and influences to craft songs that feel fresh and wholly her own.  Both lyrically and sonically, she strikes a fiercely independent chord, proudly releasing a deeply personal record Putting On Airs that reflects her own upbringing in Tennessee, including the prejudices and injustices that she witnessed as a child that continue to impact her life to this day. According to Rae, "this album was born out of a need to do some healing work in my personal life, in order to address some fears and patterns of mine to allow my true feelings to come to the surface." In this episode, Erin discusses growing up in the southern United States, living with internalised homophobia, her aunt’s experience of losing a child custody battle in Alabama in the 1990s due to being LGBT+ and the importance of acknowledging the small steps of progress towards LGBT+ rights in the South. Episode 24 - Erin Rae - Flying Towards The Mirror

Live from Banjo

In episode 24, I sit down with Erin Rae.  Erin is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist based in Nashville, Tennessee. Erin and I discuss her life, growing up in Jackson, TN, and Bellevue, a neighboring community of Nashville.  Erin discusses her journey in music, which started at home, with both her mother and father performing as local musicians and bringing her up in a house steeped in music.  However, Erin didn’t really begin to focus on music until later than most musicians.Though she had always sung as a hobby, she didn’t learn to play the guitar until after high school and didn’t begin to focus on music until she was nearly 20 years old. We discuss her inspirations, musical career, and detachment from persona and labels as she moves into a new phase of life and recent progression in her musical career.  We also discuss sobriety, recovery, and the fear and excitement that result from living life in the present and releasing the reigns of our own experience to something new. In this week’s wrap-up, Crystal and I discuss the history of Red Rock’s Amphitheatre, Jonathan Wilson of Topanga Canyon, Laurel Canyon heroes, Scott Walker, Slim Pickens, origins of heavy metal, Jerry Seinfeld and transcendental meditation, Marcus Gillis, and mindful meditation, and The Coal Miner’s Daughters Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gale, my wife, and wrap-up co-host’s namesakes. Please enjoy my honest and vulnerable conversation with Ms. Erin Rae.Erin Rae - GemsONVHS Erin Rae - InstagramErin Rae - Tour
