The Lennon Courtney Podcast

With Eileen FlynnWelcome to Lennon Courtney Left Alone, with Guests. For our final episode in this series, we are delighted to be joined by a living history maker, Senator Eileen Flynn. Senator Flynn is an Independent politician who has served as a Senator since June 2020, after being nominated by the Taoiseach Micheal Martin. She is the first member of the Travelling Community to serve in the Oireachtas. But Eileen has always been a groundbreaker. When she was in secondary school, both she and her twin became the first members of the Labre Park community in Ballyfermot to reach third level education in 2008. Flynn then went on to study at Trinity College Dublin before attending Ballyfermot College of Further Education and later earning a degree at Maynooth University with a BA. Since then, she has worked in community development and activism on behalf of Irish Travellers. She has also campaigned on issues such as housing, marriage equality, abortion rights and anti-racism.Before you hit play, we’d really appreciate it if you took a minute to leave us a short positive review and five stars at this link. Episode 2: Other Voices Series: Senator Eileen Flynn "Just smile and say hello"

Creative Voices Ireland, Mullingar Toastmasters, Westmeath.

Senator Eileen accepted the invitation of our President Maria Costello to attend our club as part of our 'Other Voices Series'. The aim of this series is to give a platform and voice to marginalised communities. It highlights the challenge of exclusion and its far reaching consequences.  The Senator gives us a great understanding of the challenges the travelling community face and how we can help with a message of inclusion. Article from the Mullingar Examiner of the meeting https://www.westmeathexaminer.ie/2021/03/12/mullingar-toastmasters-other-voices-series-welcomed-senator-eileen-flynn/

Eileen Flynn – Traveller, Senator, Activist. Ep.13

Rory Hearne's Reboot Republic Podcast by Tortoise Shack Media

In this Reboot Republic podcast we talk to the inspirational Eileen Flynn, Traveller Activist, Senator and tired mammy of Bille, who is teething. Eileen talks about her experiences of discrimination from a young age and it's life long impact on her. We hear about her decision at 25 to no longer deny her Traveller identity, why she believes the politicians in Leinster House should resemble the people they represent, and going beyond tokenism. We also discuss the inequalities faced by Travellers, the Homeless & Direct Provision residents. Eileen eloquently outlines the need for everyone to have a home, saying - "blowing out someone else's candle doesn't make your own burn brighter". Finally, she talks about how education opened her mind, empowered her & gave her confidence. An incredible story.Join us: patreon.com/tortoiseshack

S3 Ep14: Senator Eileen Flynn

Be Grand

Joining Andy this week on Be Grand is Senator Eileen Flynn. Eileen made history recently as the first person from the travelling community to be elected to the Oireachtas.  Eileen talks to Andy about growing up and how the legacies and lessons of her parents would stay with her throughout her life. These include how her father’s love of the news would provide Eileen’s first taste of politics and what she thinks he would have said when she made the airwaves plus how her mother’s kind way of dealing with the racism shown towards her and her sister always made them feel okay.   Plus as suicide rates among the travelling community remain shockingly high Eileen talks about what urgently needs to be done to try and combat this and the struggle with trusting a system that has constantly let you down.  All this plus Eileen’s first sparks with activism which lead to sparks of a… different kind and keeping your twin out of trouble.   A genuine inspiration, Eileen’s story proves that you might just get to where you want in life despite what people think you can do.  @Love1solidarity

Olive Morris, Eileen Flynn, Women and Gaming

Woman's Hour

It's 41 years this Sunday that Olive Morris died. She was a Black British feminist and civil rights campaigner. A couple of weeks ago, Google marked what would have been her 68th birthday with a drawing of her on its header. So who was Olive Morris and who are some of the other Black British female activists from the past who we should know about? We talk to Angelina Osborne, a researcher and lecturer, and Olivette Otele who's a professor specialising in Black female history.Eileen Flynn is the first Traveller to be made a Senator in the Irish Parliament. The Irish PM, or Taoiseach, can nominate a handful of people to work in the Upper House and a couple of weeks ago Eileen was one of them. She says it’s an historic moment, especially for Travellers who are so marginalized and stigmatized in Irish society. She talks to us from her home in Donegal. All week we’ve been looking at women and gaming. We've explored how gaming has changed and how it can improve some people's mental health. The UK gaming industry is worth billions and the video games sector makes up more than half of the UK’s entire entertainment market. Women are 50% of those who play and those over 40 are among the fastest growing group of people that play on their smartphones. But the number of women working in the industry is much lower and today we hear from them.Photo Credit: Lambeth Council
