18. Dating Men vs. Women|Anna Akana

Growth Minds

Last year, I opened up on Growth Minds talking about losing my Aunt to suicide when I was 15. A friend linked me to a YouTube video from Anna Akana, who lost her little sister to suicide when she was 17. Coincidentally, both were from the same city in Japan. And both were gone too soon.  The unfortunate reality is that seeking mental help is far too stigmatized in our society. Asian-Americans are 3x less likely to seek help than other Americans, and you can see why after hearing Anna’s personal experience. With the surprising event that unfolded this week, Anna’s story is another reminder to us all that life is fragile, and we can lose the ones we love at any point. But this isn’t an entirely sad story. While Anna shares that she didn’t laugh for years after her sister died, you’ll hear plenty of laughs in our ‘off-the-rails’ conversation. From dating as a bisexual, relationship tips, dealing with your depression to rediscovering your self-identity when you feel lost - we go through it all. This was a fun one. Hope you enjoy. If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes and a rating on our Spotify show? It takes less than 60 seconds, and it really makes a difference in helping to convince hard-to-get guests. Anna Akana: ON How To Trust Yourself More & The Importance Of Using Your Voice To Help Others

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On this episode of On Purpose, I sat down with Anna Akana. Anna is an American actress, filmmaker, musician, author, and comedian. She is most known for her massive presence on YouTube. Anna’s experience losing her 13-year-old sister to suicide when she 17 taught her that ultimately age is a gift that comes with wisdom. She's destigmatizing the way we feel about mental health issues & reminding us that we are not alone and your voice matters to at-least one person. Text Jay Shetty 310-997-4177
