#086 - Adam Gemili - Team GB's Fastest Olympian (If It's Not Alright It's Not The End)
Adam Gemili is a professional British sprinter. Adam is and has been the fastest Team GB sprinter over the last 8 years. He won gold at the junior athletic championships in Barcelona in 2012 in the 100m - before competiting at his first Olympics at London 2012 after training as a sprinter for only 4 months! It’s an incredible achievement where he did himself proud, finishing third in the semi final narrowly missing out in a place in the final with a time of 10.06s. He continued to develop his speed and style and also raced in 200m - he quickly found success winning the silver medal at the 2014 commonwealth games beaten just by Kemar bailey- Cole of Jamaica - and in 2015 back to the 100m Adam became the 100th man ever in history to break the 10 second barrier - clocking a time of 9.97s. He then reached the 200m final at Rio 2016 and had heartbreak when three sprinters crossed the line together and the photo finish showed Adam Missed out for the Olympic bronze medal by 6thousanths of a second! But He then went on to win gold in the 4 x 100m relay in the 2017 world championships and silver in the 2019 world championships when the guys set a European record of 37.36 s. In this episode We talk all about what’s it’s been like to go on this journey as a sprinter and fly the flag for British sprinting - 100m and 200m events in what is certainly the most romantic event in athletics. We also talk about why he started working with prof Steven peters, Author of the book the chimp pradox, and how he helped he to build a stronger mindset. We discuss how he’s coping given the Olympics are cancelled this year due to covid - And of course, we talk about what it’s like to race and compete against usain bolt! Enjoy! Footie, Fourths, and Fabulous Four-by-Ones: Adam Gemili Interview Special
Backstraight Boys (& Girl) Athletics Chat
Adam Gemili likes to break records. When he produced a dazzling 9.97 in 2015, he became the first British athlete to dip below the two hallowed barriers of men's sprinting. When he scorched past several of his competitors down the back straight of the Olympic Stadium in the 2017 4x100 final, he helped Great Britain to their first ever global title, and a whopping national record. When his funding was reduced to that of a relay athlete only, he marked his return to form with a championship record at the 2019 British Champs. We reckon you'll love this interview special, which is with a bona fide world class athlete and proper fan favourite: a hugely talented sprinter who's been bringing smiles to spectators since he burst onto the scene in 2012, having switched from football to the track just that season. It's not all been sunshine and rainbows, however: Gemili has endured his fair share of disappointment - from recurrent injury troubles to agonising 4th-place finishes at both the Rio Olympics and last year's World Championships. His tearful mixed zone interview after the latter broke hearts nationwide, and he's open about his burning desire to start to clinch individual medals on the global stage. We talk about all of the above, plus - and this is perhaps the most important question of them all: is there any substance to the viral 'FOOTBALLER RUNS FASTER THAN CHRISTIAN COLEMAN' videos driving track and field fans nuts every few months? If anyone can set the record straight - it's Gemili. If you enjoy this episode (and we think you will), why not let us know? You can leave us a review via your podcast provider, tweet us (@Claire_GThomas and @BackstraightB), or say 'hi' on Instagram (@BackstraightBoysPodcast).Stay safe, and thanks for listening. We think you're all brilliant.
Is being kind and living by your values more important than ambition and success? Adam Gemili is one of Britain's top sprinters. He's a former European Champion at 200 metres who has just missed out on a medal at the Olympics and the World Championships, finishing fourth at both. The theme of this conversation is 'values', and why living by your values could be more important than pinning your hopes, dreams and self-esteem on your goals, which you may not achieve including for reasons outside your control. As well as the importance of values, Simon and Adam discuss:- managing the limbic part of the brain, known by many as their 'Chimp', thanks to Steve Peters (who appeared on the show last year).- Why you might want to consider talking out loud to yourself- The power of practicing visualisation and how to get good at it- How to create good habits- Getting perspective on your inner criticThis episode was recorded in two parts. The first part was recorded shortly before the scale of the threat of coronavirus became clear, with Adam still focused on going to the Olympics this summer. The second, shorter part was recorded just three weeks later after the situation had changed dramatically and rapidly, with both Adam and Simon in isolation. As ever please do get in touch with thoughts, ideas, and questions via @simonmundie on social media.
