NAAFI break with The Rowing Marine (Lee Spencer) I wanted to be brave and average!
Welcome to the NAAFI break podcast, where we shine a light on the transition process from the military. We speak to Veteranfamily about their experiences and the challenges they faced on leaving the Service and finding a new purpose. We have looked at the transition through several lenses, this week we change again, to look at the end of the Service career that is thrust open the individual by injury. Lee Spencer is by my definition an Above Average Joe, who growing up wanted to be a brave person. His journey is both raw, emotional and inspiring, with total honesty as he speaks.Following a traumatic accident which saw him lose his leg, he is now an ambassador for BLESMA and his sole purpose is to keep the injured service personnel in the public consciousness, with incredible feats of human endurance and speaking to others about his experiences. Please share to anyone with a Service connection or who is interspersed in understanding more about what our Services families have to offer. There is a bonus episode linked to this in which Veteranfamily read the Rudyard Kipling poem“Tommy” discussed by Lee during his interview.
Season 2, Ep 22 - Lee Spencer on Never Losing Sight of The Dream
28 Summers - Live Adventurously
My guest today is Lee Spencer - Lee was born in Dagenham, but made in The Royal Marines. Lee lives in Devon and was a serving Royal Marine for 24 years. After coming through three operational tours of Afghanistan unscathed, Lee lost his right leg after being hit by an engine block as he was helping a motorist who had crashed into the central reservation of the M3 in Surrey in 2014. In this episode, he shares his remarkable story - from a young man desperate to join the Marines and grappling with imposter syndrome, to his devastating injury, recovery and incredible ocean rowing exploits. This is a must-listen episode and I truly hope you take away as much from this chat as I did.

With the way this season’s starting, it’s a great time to head to Vegas and put some money on a longshot! On this week’s show, Brett McMillan is joined by Lee Spencer from RacinBoys.com and NBC Sports columnist Dustin Long. With three surprising winners to start 2021, is there something that can pinpoint to so much parity? William Byron and Rudy Fugle wasted no time getting to victory lane, giving Rick Henrick something to smile about as his young driver is working with his third crew chief in as many seasons. NASCAR announced the format for the dirt race at Bristol, but it’s not the heat races that caught Lee’s attention.
