Today we’re chatting with Kathryn Sollmann, who is a career coach, author and speaker on a mission to help current and returning professional women always stay in the workforce and find the work that fits their lives. Kathryn has created and led hundreds of conferences and workshops to help women sustain and advance careers through every age and life stage. Kathryn is recognized as a thought leader in the women and work space. Her book—Ambition Redefined: Why the Corner Office Doesn’t Work for Every Woman &amp; What to Do Instead—is the everyday woman’s guide to developing her own brand of ambition and success and finding many lucrative ways to lean “in-between” alongside caregiving for children and aging parents. A mother of two adult daughters, Kathryn has worked non-stop since the age of 16. She coaches women with insights from her own flexible work experience—as a full-time and part-time employee, a business owner, a marketing consultant, a telecommuter, a freelancer and a recruiter. A lot of what Kathryn talks about in her book on this show today relates to women and mothers, but so much of what we discussed applies equally to men. Statistically, there are more women struggling to get back into the workforce after a break, but as more men are staying home and downshifting in their careers, I think all of the insights and wisdom Kathryn shares in this episode will be an important reminder for you men out there as well. When mothers give up work they don't just lose their current salary, but their future earnings growth and the benefits they would've accrued over their career.  Kathryn Sollmann is a US-based career coach and author of Ambition Redefined,  Why the Corner Office Doesn't Work for Every Woman &amp; What to Do Instead.   She advocates for staying in work once you've had children even if you think childcare expenses mean you think you can't.    Kathryn recognises that the examples of women in leadership roles are not appealing or realistic for most women's lives. The huge job managing hundreds of people on a vast salary will invariably mean you have little time for other things - like children and family. But as she explains in her book success isn't about a certain job title, it's about finding the flexibility that means you can be home nursing a sick child or ageing parent at 2pm or in the office to lead a big meeting at 7am.  She says women can have substantial careers but they have to do a professional pitch for flexibility. Doing this works 80% of the time. Not doing it, often results in rejection. It is hard work to get physically and financially fit, but today we’re talking about one of those areas of financial fitness, and that’s making more money, specifically for women. Women frequently feel torn between caring for their loved ones, whether it is kids or parents, and trying to make money.
