Another episode of the PK Triathlon Podcast, another amazing guest... this time Kate Charlton and Paul Jones are joined by Paul Newsome from Swimsmooth.

In this candid chat we talk about everything, Paul's history in the sport, what beer you shouldn't drink, wedding photography (yes we went there), how Swimsmooth came about, how Paul ended up in Perth Western Australia and how football really should not be called soccer in Yorkshire!

As a typical swim kid at his swimming club, he hammered out tough freestyle and butterfly sets through his teenage years in blissful ignorance of stroke technique work.

At 17 he was introduced to the sport of Triathlon and switched to elite triathlon competition. He joined the UK's World Class Potential program at Bath University whilst studying for his Sports Science Degree. Notable training buddies during this time were Simon Lessing, Richard Allen, Richard Stanard, Stuart Hayes and Julie Dibens.

Whilst studying for his Sports Science Degree, Paul discovered his real passion for teaching and coaching, finding that he loved sharing his knowledge with friends and training partners.

Grab a cup or tea, a glass of wine, a beer... whatever you like and enjoy the episode.

Paul Newsome from SwimSmooth.com joins us this week for a special edition aimed at helping you improve your swim stroke. Paul is one of the World’s most experienced swim coaches and stroke analysts, having been coaching swimming professionally for over 20 years. The swim smooth method has been adopted by British Triathlon and the ITU for their triathlon coaching courses, and their ‘swim types’ system is great at helping you quickly identify what kind of swimmer you are, and how to rapidly improve.

In this episode we cover:

The background that led to the formation of SwimSmooth

The Swim Types system, consisting of the following six swim types:

Arnie

Bambino

Kicktastic

Overglider

Swinger

Smooth

Stroke Rate - how to measure where you’re at, how to find the correct range for your swim type and body size, and how to test what stroke rate will work best for your body and swim stroke.

The Finis Tempo Trainer Pro , and why it’s such a useful tool.

Paul’s thoughts from having coached Joe Skipper. We also cover the lessons that we can all apply to our own swimming from him having watched Joe’s improvements, and how they’ve translated into his open water racing.

#109 Paul Newsome – The balance between passion and burn out

Play
Read more

This week we welcome back WA Real’s first ever guest Paul Newsome, founder of Swimsmooth, who opens up on his recent experience and realisation of being a workaholic.

Paul, a very driven and competitive man, very candidly shares how the re-occurrence of a major back injury minutes before departing on a family holiday was the entry in a very dark period that has brought about some very significant revelations about the manner in which he has been living his life and the required changes that he’s beginning to make.

We cover a variety of topics including the importance of sleep, how we carry stories from our childhood that shape how we live as adults, the nature of being very achievement focus and how we don’t necessarily listen to those closest to us.

The beauty of this conversation is that it freshly captures a superb example of someone waking up to the control and impact of the events and stories that lie deep within us. It captures how if left unchecked these events and stories can such a grip on us that it takes something major to bring them to light and shake us out of it.

What is clear by the end of the conversation is how this may just be the best thing to happen to Paul and his swim coaching despite being such a personally painful experience.
