Don McLean - Music Legend / American Icon (American Pie)
Don McLeanTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Don McLean. Legendary singer / songwriter; Don is most known for his super smash hit AMERICAN PIE, which was released FIFTY YEARS AGO this year! In this episode, Don and I chat about: some of his songs, his new and upcoming projects, including: a new album of originals, a new album of covers, a new documentary, a play, a movie, and a new children's book called "American Pie: A Fable" which drops in October. Then he tells us about the true story behind the hit song "Killing Me Softly"; which is not his song, but has a very interesting connection that I bet you didn't know about. Don was kind enough to let me play some of his classic songs during this episode, as well as one of the covers off of his new album of covers called "Still Playin Favorites". Be sure to check out his website for upcoming tour dates (covid permitting). Don McLean is a legend, a brilliant poet and songwriter; but more importantly, he was a super king and generous to me! As we begin to see the light at the end of the COVID tunnel, Cal converses with the legendary singer/songwriter of American Pie and Vincent about the blessings of freedom and connectivity. Along the way, as they talk about music, Don tells Cal about the feeling that goes through him when a great song gets off the ground. “Most music you hear lays there. It’s nothing. You don’t want to hear it again. It’s a nice try, but it’s a strikeout. Then there’s stuff that lives.” Leaving Cal wondering about what it’s going to take to get out a message about reshaping healthcare that will have the same impact as a song everyone loves to sing 50 years after its creation.

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon
Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon along with The Jeremy White Podcast present famed musician, Don McLean. (Recorded February 2021). Press release: This year marks the 50th anniversary release of the iconic song, American Pie. In celebration of this legendary song, Home Free and Don McLean teamed up for a special collaboration (released on January 29th 2021). This is also the first time Don has recorded the song since the original recording. An official music video was released on February 3rd - 'the day the music died' the day Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. Richardson died tragically in an Iowa plane crash. We’re also excited to use this release and the platform to continue to draw awareness to the National Independent Venue Associations’s (NIVA) work in raising money for emergency grants for independent music venues and promoters so that 2021 does not become the year the stages died, too. We’ll be pushing Home Free fans to donate to NIVA and making sure they’re aware that just because The Save Our Stagesact passed, the work is not done. Help support the show.
