In 2019, the Embassy was proud to support Miramar Creative’s Creative Futures conference – the two-day event offered insights into new technologies and demonstrated their application to creativity, business and our future daily lives. One of the U.S. speakers at Creative Futures was Professor Margaret Maile Petty - Executive Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, University of Technology, Sydney. Margaret has served in a series of academic leadership roles in the United States, New Zealand and Australia, where she has developed and managed a wide spectrum of impactful programmes and initiatives primarily focused on design and innovation. Professor Margaret Maile Petty talks to Mike at Creative Futures

Margaret Maile Petty is Head of the School of Design at Victoria University of Wellington (NZ) and has spent better part of the last decade focusing on innovation in design education, helping young designers to learn to speak many languages, to be able to work with engineers, scientists, artists, local and distant communities, to think like entrepreneurs, and to explore new technologies and tools while maintaining a design-led approach. Exploring the porous boundaries of design, Margaret argues that although the challenges designers face today have never been greater or more complex, the potential of the discipline for growth and impact is equally unlimited. Margaret is a founding member of DesignCo, a coalition New Zealand universities, government agencies and professional organizations united with the common aim of promoting the social, cultural, economic, and environmental benefits of design thinking, research and practice. In addition to her advocacy on the behalf of design education and practice, Margaret has published broadly on the discourse, production, and representation of artificial light in the built environment, and is a co-editor with Professors Dietrich Neumann and Sandy Isenstadt of Cities of Light (Routledge, 2014). She is also a co-editor of Architectures of Display: Department Stores and Modern Retail with Anca Lasc and Patricia Lara-Benacourt (Ashgate, 2016).
