When Engine Companies Must Do Truck Company Work with Justin Bailey

Code 3 - The Firefighters' Podcast

Smaller fire departments often work with less personnel than they need. That means there are very few specialists in a volunteer department or a rural agency. One of the specialists you’ll miss right away if you join one is the truckie. While city departments are having (good-natured) arguments over who’s better or more important, small town engine companies need to do both jobs. And, sometimes, they need to do them with two or three firefighters on the engine. How do you manage those roles? What’s more important when you arrive on scene? Today’s guest works at both a career department and as a volunteer and he has some thoughts.Justin Bailey is a return guest to the Code 3 podcast. He’s the fire chief of the Oliver Springs, Tennessee, Fire Department. He’s also a master firefighter with the Knoxville, Tennessee, Fire Department, where he’s worked since 2007.

Justin Bailey: Campfire Woodworks

The Woodpreneur Podcast

Justin Bailey: Campfire Woodworks Welcome back to a brand new episode of the Woodpreneur Podcast. Today, your host Steve Larosiliere sits down with Justin Bailey from Campfire Woodworks. Justin had the idea to start Campfire Woodworks many years ago based on his love of building and creating. However, at the time, he had no outlet for that creative energy. Follow along as Steve and Justin discuss growing up, finding your path, and the inspiration behind his company’s brand.  “I've always been a crafty person, high school shop class and all that, but I sort of got away from it. I went to college in New York City, and I've lived in New York City for about 14-15 years. Then five years ago, my wife and I decided to move out to the suburbs, so we bought a house in Rahway, New Jersey.  That house came with a garage and one of the agreements that we had when we first moved here was that anything that needed to be made or fixed or done around the house, we would try to do it ourselves before we paid someone else to try and do it. So out of necessity, I ended up building a kitchen island for our kitchen with a couple of tools in the yard, on a folding table from Costco. Then I kind of caught the bug again, I remembered how much I enjoyed doing crafty stuff.  One project turned into two, then three, until eventually I built a cutting board and I moved all my tools into the garage. We had never parked a car in there and had been empty for the first year we had the house. So I cleaned up the garage, put a little Workbench and a couple of tools in there, did some projects, and a bunch of my friends reached out to me asking, ‘Hey, can you make me this? Can you make me that?’” Justin Bailey Read More

Episode 186: Episode 6-17 – Chief Justin Bailey – The Importance of a Training Calendar

5-Alarm Task Force!

It is no secret that voluntarism is at a low in this country. Society always changes and evolves and with that said, this problem is far broader than just the volunteer fire service. Even before the pandemic, fewer and fewer people were able to find adequate time to contribute to volunteer positions throughout local, regional and national organizations. One of the largest impacts of the lower availability of volunteers is the shortage of personnel in the volunteer fire service and, there multiple causes behind this phenomenon. In turn, volunteer fire departments must “up their game” as regards training, so that the members will be as safe as possible and the community will benefit from their assistance. My guest is Chief Justin Bailey of the Oliver Springs TN Fire Dept. Chief Bailey talks about the need for a training calendar. The calendar will advise all the members what topics, tactics or practices will be covered and when. While not every member may make a given drill night, there are always make-ups scheduled, in an effort to be fair to all. Learn more of what Chief Bailey faces everyday and how it might not be too different from what you experience in your own volunteer department. You can watch us on our YouTube® channel, “5-Alarm Task Force Corp.” or tune in to our podcast via your favorite podcast platform or visit our website at https://www.5-AlarmTaskForceCorp.org and scroll down the homepage to listen in. To make a donation towards our 2022 Campaign to raise $12,000 to help our Brothers & Sisters, and/or their families in dire need, please visit our homepage! Episode #82 - Reimagining Apologetics with Dr. Justin Bailey

The Two Cities

Continuing our apologetics series, we are joined by Dr. Justin Bailey, who is Assistant Professor of Theology at Dordt University and the author of Reimagining Apologetics: The Beauty of Faith in a Secular Age(IVP Academic). In our conversation, Dr. Bailey offers his constructive proposal for what apologetics could look like that gets beyond a mere focus on the intellect. Further, he wants to distance his approach to apologetics from what he calls “capital A apologetics,” or magisterial apologetics, which promotes a “sage of the stage” who offers a kind of top-down approach full of defeater arguments. Dr. Bailey is clear that his proposal is not an attempt to get rid of the classical arguments for God’s existence, but rather he wants to open up the realm of what fits into the apologetic enterprise. This expanse needs to include the role of the imagination, which is not infantile or make believe, but rather is oriented towards reality, and specifically what possibilities stand before us, thus helping people see what possibilities are available in the life of faith to those who stand outside of it. And the other key expansive bit is the role of empathy, our ability to entertain the perspectives of others and to recognize what a person needs in that moment of encounter, which might not be a defeater argument. Team members of the episode from The Two Cities includes: Dr. Amber Bowen and Dr. John Anthony Dunne.
