EP 198 - Jen Kirkman: Two Anxiety Paths, Same Destination
The Anxious Truth - A Panic, Anxiety, and Mental Health Podcast
Jen Kirkman is a comedian, author, actor, TV writer, and podcaster that has lived through anxiety and panic for large portions of her life. I was fortunate enough to have Jen on the podcast this week to talk about her path into anxiety and panic, then out the other side. I’m sure her story will sound familiar to most listeners. While talking with Jen (I was on her podcast last week), I realized that we had lived very different experiences emotionally and mentally, yet both wound up in the same place with regard to anxiety and panic issues. Panic attacks. Irrational fears. Driving anxiety. Life restrictions. Jen and I lived a similar experience with anxiety even when our emotional and thinking styles could not be more different. I spent some time this week exploring this with Jen. --- For full show notes on this episode: https://theanxioustruth.com/198 My books, social, and other links: https://theanxioustruth.com/links Support The Anxious Truth: https://theanxioustruth.com/support Music Credit: AfterGlow by Ben Drake (with permission) https://bendrakemusic.com
Today we are joined by Ken Kirkman - comedian, actress, writer & host of the podcast Anxiety Bites. Jen shares about her loving (yet dysfunctional upbriniging), her career, and her lifelong challenges with Panic and Generalized Anxiety Disorders. She also talks about her challenges with money and underearning.WHAT IS UNDEREARNING?!?!?"Underearning is many things, not all of which are about money. Underearning is aboutunderachieving, or under-being, no matter how much money we make. It is about the inability to fully acknowledge and express our capabilities and competencies. The visible consequence is the inability to provide for one’s needs, including future needs. Our underearning can result from many things, including not acknowledging our talents. It can result from living on the edge by not making enough money, spending most of the money we have, avoiding healthy risks that can move our lives forward, and not preparing for the future. Underearning is about not living up to our unique potential, not following through on our dreams and goals. It’s about giving up on ourselves." Underearners Anonymous PamphletJen Kirkman is an American stand-up comedian, television writer and actress, best known for her regular appearances on late-night talk show Chelsea Lately, and the HBO television series Drunk History. Depresh Mode with John Moe
Anxiety has cost Jen Kirkman several things over the course of her life, including, as she explains in our conversation, a study abroad program in Amsterdam, an effective outcome of a fear of flying class, and a pleasant time on a Ferris wheel. She doesn’t even remember that trip on the Ferris wheel but she knows it happened from an old photo where she looks absolutely haunted. Among the other problems anxiety has caused is confusion in kindergarten about whether she actually had parents. Along the way, Jen has become a successful comedian, comedy writer, and best-selling author, known for her candid and often hilarious stories of her life and the situations she’s found herself in.Jen is managing her anxiety now. She’s recognizing the cognitive distortions and relying on her own accumulated skills and experience to get through the moments and events that anxiety is intent on messing up.Visit Jen Kirkman's website at www.jenkirkman.com.
