Your Last Decade #21: Chris Heuertz

The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey

As we enter this new decade, I thought it would be fun to talk to a few friends and reflect back on what life was like 10 years ago. In these conversations, you’ll hear guests speak about what God has done in their life, their dreams and goals, things they would have done differently, and things they’re most proud of. And, looking back always causes me to look forward, so we’ll also chat about dreams for the next ten years!

My guest today is Chris Heuertz. Chris is an instigator for good, a champion of collaboration, and a witness to hope. He teaches the Enneagram in workshops around the world and has authored 5 books including the award-winning and best-selling book, The Sacred Enneagram and recently released, The Enneagram of Belonging.

In today’s episode, we chat about Chris’s last 10 years. We touch on his time in India as a young adult where he was mentored by Mother Teresa and how he helped launch South Asia's first pediatric AIDS care home. He shares his journey with the Enneagram and contemplation and how they have affected the deep soul work he’s involved with -- especially in the era of COVID-19. Chris also dives into his new book, The Enneagram of Belonging which aims to help us develop an honest relationship with our type, confronting our "inner dragons," practicing self-compassion, and thereby coming to fully belong to ourselves--and, ultimately, to love itself. I’ve been sitting with his words, “The world is changing in real time.. and being present is pregnant with the potential with every moment we may be given to us in the future.” and, friends, I have a feeling you’re going to want to listen through this episode more than once.

Be sure you check out Chris’s new book, The Enneagram of Belonging: A Compassionate Journey of Self-Acceptance.

198: The Enneagram of Belonging, How Self-Compassion Catalyzes Change in Life, and the Secret of Vulnerability (feat. Chris Heuertz)

In life, if we can’t self-observe, we can’t self-correct. In today’s conversation, we’re going to take a deep dive into an angle of the Enneagram we’ve not yet talked about here on the show, and that’s the core need for belonging. Today’s guest, Chris Heuertz, says, “We often live with a muscle memory of limitation that doesn’t believe we have the potential to be strong and courageous in life.” It’s easy to run from (or ignore) the aspects of our personality that we don’t like, instead of running to them in truth to find meaning and experience transformation that will ultimately shape us to be the people we’ve been designed to be. Belonging is about integration, and that’s where we’re headed today.

Brené & Chris Heuertz: A Skeptic and a Teacher on the Enneagram and Spiritual Contemplation

Unlocking Us with Brené Brown

Chris Heuertz and I talk about the Enneagram which he describes as a "compassionate sketch of possibilities that shows us who we can become if we remember what our souls' created purpose was." I think Chris's power as a teacher comes from his compassion, his deep understanding of how fear works in our lives, and his own healthy skepticism about things that seem too easy and too reductive.

The enneagram is one of the most popular tools for understanding personality. It’s become a frequent topic of conversation, the subject of endless memes, jokes, and lighthearted discussion. But while these things are fun, they barely begin to scratch the surface of what the enneagram has to offer. The depth of this powerful tool reflects the nuance and complications of what it means to be human. Chris Heuertz, author of The Sacred Enneagram, returns to the podcast to dive into the deeper side of the enneagram, how it reflects more variety than just the nine types suggest, and what this means for us when we walk through painful seasons.
