Journalist Gloria Steinem on activism, patriarchy and political power

MPR News with Kerri Miller

In her latest book, “The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off,” activist and journalist Gloria Steinem writes this: “It’s not only that we live in a patriarchy; it’s that patriarchy lives in us.”

In a recent discussion, Steinem talked with MPR News host Kerri Miller about that quote and the role of patriarchy, specifically in how it can start at home. She said:

“We’re all the product of how we were raised in our families and if our families were not democratic families — that is, women raise children more than men did — I rest my case. We absorb that and we absorb the idea that if there is a hierarchy in our family, then it must be inevitable. And this, I think, we’re just beginning to connect to our understanding of national and world politics.”

During the wide-ranging conversation as part of the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs’ Distinguished Carlson Lecture, Steinem explored the history of women and activism; the current conversation surrounding the Equal Rights Amendment; the #MeToo movement; and what it would take for a woman to become president of the United States.

We are thrilled to bring you this special and personal conversation with actor Alicia Vikander! She talks to us about starring as feminist icon Gloria Steinem in the upcoming film ‘The Glorias’ (directed by Julie Taymor), about how she has has found her voice and what she wants to do with her Hollywood power!

After more than a decade in the industry, and post Oscar-win, Alicia Vikander speaks to Christina about how she is learning to take small breaks and how cooking helps! About her focus and how she and Steinem connected in personal ways. How, early in her Hollywood career, an actress spoke up for her in an uncomfortable, sexist situation and how much that taught her. And how she wants to use her voice and her power to play women from all angles and all dimensions and to get smaller movies with interesting writer/directors off the ground, like her upcoming film ‘Blue Bayou’. And much more!

‘The Glorias’ premiered at Sundance and will out later this year.

Gloria Steinem Knows The Truth Will Piss You Off

Mamamia Book Club

It was Gloria Steinem who said, “The truth will set you free… but first it will piss you off.”

Now, 62 years since she wrote her first book, ‘The Thousand Indias’, Steinem has published a book of her most iconic quotes.

“Without leaps of imagination” she once wrote, “or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.”

And then there was, “Some of us are becoming the men we wanted to marry.”

Now 85, Steinem is the author of eight books, and best known as one of the most effective and admired spokespeople of the American feminist movement.

So, what is she currently pissed off about? And has the world actually changed that much since feminism challenged everything?

Our guest is writer, activist, and feminist organizer Gloria Steinem.  In 1971, when Steinem founded the groundbreaking “Ms.” women’s magazines focused on finding a husband, or the right lipstick. But Ms. carried articles on de-sexing the English language, abortion, and the real challenges women were facing. The feminist icon continues to fight for equality across race and gender. And at eighty-five years of age, her energy is undiminished.  On November 13, 2019, Gloria Steinem came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to talk with Amy Richards about today’s political climate, the need for organizing across generations, and her lifelong wish to be a stand-up comic.
