Bob Dylan once sang, “it’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there,” and gee whiz if that ain’t ever the tone of the times these days—that sense of encroaching darkness and regret and a growing nostalgia for all that’s been lost…And guiding us through that not-quite-dark-but-sure-as-shit-not-light-at-all tunnel is a guest whose words are like a lantern in the fog, here to see us to shore and safety…

All The President's Minutes - Minute 26 with Walter Chaw

Play

All The President's Minutes is a podcast where conversations about movies, journalism, politics and history meet. Each show we use the seminal and increasingly prescient 1976 film All The President's Men as a portal, to engage with the themes and the warnings of the film resonating since its release. For minute seventeen host, Blake Howard joins senior film critic for award-winning webzine FILMFREAKCENTRAL.NET, author and one of the world's premiere film critics Walter Chaw. Walter and Blake discuss the art of 'bad' conversation, living the mantra that the more you know, the less you understand and unpack complex critical thoughts surround cinema.
About Walter ChawWalter Chaw is a senior film critic for award-winning webzine FilmFreakCentral.net. His last book, a monograph for the film MIRACLE MILE, was published in 2012. In this two-part episode, I'm joined by senior film critic for award-winning webzine FilmFreakCentral.net - one of the world's premiere film critics - Walter Chaw. Walter and I discuss that unpacking our reactions to Mohicans is a 'Rosetta Stone' for masculine entertainments of this type, and marvel at Wes Studi's monumental Magua. To close the episode, I talk to the editor at Business Insider and writer J.R Hennessy about DDL as beefcake, his hilarious twitter and layering in three distinct political apparatuses.

About the show: THE LAST (12 minutes) OF THE MOHICANS is a twelve-episode limited podcast series focusing on the climax of the Michael Mann's 1992 epic The Last of the Mohicans. The format of the podcast, which slightly differs from ONE HEAT MINUTE, utilises the entire final twelve-minute climax of Mohicans as a portal to explore the themes of the movie, the cross-section of political apparatuses, colonial superpower wrangling, and Mr Mann's riff on the "great American hero." The final episode - once again will feature Mr Mann to unpack his intentions with the film in the conception and orchestration of its grand ending.

ONE HEAT MINUTE is the podcast examining Michael Mann’s 1995 crime opus HEAT minute by minute. It’s the 163rd minute (2:42:00 - 2:43:00) - host Blake Howard joins senior film critic for award-winning webzine FilmFreakCentral.net, author, and one of the world’s premiere film critics - Walter Chaw. Blake and Walter discuss the jungian shadow play, that HEAT is at its best when it’s dealing with the things that bond men together (whatever form they take), Michael Mann’s unromantic portrayal of violence, HEAT as something to admire rather than to like and finally Ashley Judd being at her "Judd-ist."

Watch With Jen & Friends: Episode 9 - Walter Chaw

When you ask Film Freak Central senior critic and former University of Denver film professor Walter Chaw a question, you're going to get an answer that's as articulate as it is profound. Friendly and contemplative, for Jen Johans, it was both an honor and a delight to speak with the former VP of Operations at Denver's Alamo Drafthouse about life during quarantine for introverts, advice he has for aspiring critics, his philosophy of film writing as personal excavation, the many rich and varied experiences he's had hosting movies and watching them with filmmakers, as well as his recent movie and music discoveries.

The type of conversation that begs to be listened to at least twice to fully absorb all of the striking anecdotes and pearls of wisdom he tosses off as easily and selflessly as if he were sharing the ingredients to his favorite recipe, Jen hopes you'll enjoy this chat with the great Walter Chaw as much as she did.
