Growing up in a small town surrounded by ‘tough guys’, Kim Churchill knew that wasn’t the life he was destined for. With six albums under his belt, the Australian folk, rock, and blues singer-songwriter has cemented his place as a genuine international talent. In his chat with Matt, Churchill talks about getting ‘hand-me-down’ guitar lessons from his mum and why he is repulsed by mainstream music. Churchill will be performing at the Blues on Broadbeach Festival on May 14–17. Other headline acts include Tommy Emmanuel and Karise Eden. Get your tickets from the website.

He's quirky, he's funny, down to earth, very friendly and an incredible musician.

I interview Australian singer/ songwriter Kim Churchill in the midst of his Australian Regional tour. Chatting about his new music, life on the road and who he's currently playing on his playlist.

It's a longish interview - however he's such a wonderfully interesting and fun person to chat to - there's no way I could cut this one down!

I Am, Kim Churchill

Kim Churchill has spent most of the last decade as a nomadic bard. |Making his mark as a busker after years of classical training, Kim quickly took to the road playing every town that would have him, no matter the distance. This mindset has allowed Kim to eventually progress onto the stage and into the studio, where suddenly the road wasn't the only thing calling as the sea and the sky longed for his tales. After Finding radio success a change of pace was necessary, leading Kim to reflect and to temporarily set his feet in one place. Just long enough to come to the studio with a new found drive, feeling lighter then ever before, knowing he no longer needed to chase After The Sun Kim joins the DTP to discuss his latest project, four EP's written and recorded in 4 different countries, lightly connected by what they mean to Kim. The first EP entitled "I Am" releases this month and Kim dives into it's creation process as he shares his journies and experiences with you!

Kim Churchill - Success on your own terms

It was so nice to finally have a chance to sit down and catch up with Kim Churchill. I’ve known Kim for a long time and watched his career go from strength to strength. He’s an amazing guitarist, songwriter and singer and really took foot percussion to a new level.

Here's what we chatted about:

  • What music means to Kim
  • Flow state and allowing music and lyrics to flow through you
  • Having an attitude of openness and how this relates to manifestation
  • Writing music for success compared to writing for yourself
  • Doing what you love for your job
  • Making decisions based on fear vs positivity and excitement
  • The common trait of ‘People pleasing’
  • Kim’s approach to using a gratitude journal and how it’s helped anchor him and move through times when he feels anxious
  • How your attitude makes things whatever you want them to be
  • The transition phases to becoming an adult and what that means
  • Kim’s daily practice
  • Putting spaces into your mental stream

Some of our favourite quotes from this episode.

“Often I find that the lyrics and moments of music I’m most proud of don’t come from any cognitive understanding of a lesson learnt or a skill attained, it is an obscure semi dream like thing that I don’t understand or know how I did it”

“I try to allow my music to come from an emotive kind of creative flow, where you are not thinking”

“I made music that I literally stitched fear in to…..so I had to put it down and it was an enormous weight off my shoulders to put it down, even though it was a massive step back”

“It took me a while to reconnect to writing music for myself, and for a while there I don’t even think I enjoyed playing music”

“There are pros and cons to every career path and it’s one of the few negative things about doing what you love for your job, that sometimes you stop loving it and you have to battle to get back to it”

“We need to work hard at maintaining a grateful attitude and to fill our lives”

"My tenacity to achieve my dream was always a few steps ahead of my ability. I wasn’t great in the beginning." - Kim Churchill, Monica Kade Podcast

Kim Churchill is one of Australia’s rising folk, rock, blues singers. He’s a brilliant songwriter and musician. He’s stolen many hearts and touched many lives through his thoughtful, vulnerable and moving songs. At 27, he’s already released six albums. His journey into music is a fascinating one and what I love most about Kim is his tenacity and determination to continue on his path —even when the going gets tough.

I can say that at 27 years old he’s a very intuitive and insightful young man…and today you’ll get to witness some of this wisdom.

I felt very privileged to have him share with me his life and career story.

So sit back and take a listen to our conversation. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it as much as I did recording it.

As soon as I sat down in the van, Kim Churchill offered me a mint and we both slurped away watching the rain outside. Australia's favorite one man singer songwriter was back in Canada to tour his latest record Silence/Win. This time, he's found himself at a new level of confidence about what he does.

What did busking teach Kim about a career in music? Which new song was inspired by a music festival experience? What is on Kim's "gratitude list?" Which friend would play an April Fool's joke on Kim? Which alcoholic beverage makes Kim drowsy? You'll have to listen to find out all these answers and more!

Tracks played on the show...

1) Kim Churchill, Silence/Win (2014) "Some Days the Rain May Fall"
2) Kim Churchill, Silence/Win (2014) "Window to the Sky"
3) Kim Churchill, With Sword and Shield (2010) "Loving Home" (partial/background)
4) Kim Churchill, Silence/Win (2014) "Fear the Fire"
