The Atheist Experience 25.37 09-12-2021 with Matt Dillahunty and Arden of Eden

The Atheist Experience

In today’s episode of the The Atheist Experience, Matt Dillahunty is joined by Arden Of Eden. Our first caller today is Andrew from PA. The caller is beginning to question their beliefs and is wondering how our hosts became comfortable with pushing back against their past indoctrination. Unless you have good reason to believe in a particular god, then worrying about any threats or boons derived from believing in that God isn’t justified.Up next is Sam from NE who believes that because there are things about the universe that we cannot explain today, that it must be supernatural. Sam also had some “important” information he wanted to bless the audience with.Next up is Aiden from FL who is looking for advice on how to manage their relationship with their family with regards to their opposing views of religion. There is probably no single argument that will help your family become accepting of your atheism, but this single disagreement isn’t the whole relationship with your family or how they feel about you as a person.Next is Hank from TX who is claiming that our ownership of non-human animals indicates that we are superior to those animals, and if we are superior, then there is likely a being superior to us.Up next is Robert from OR claims that a belief in a God is properly basic, that it is self-evident and doesn’t require a justification to be accepted as true.Next is Rivalod from the Netherlands who wants to know how Atheists can be moral without God. The caller states that they believe morality is based on whatever God says is right. How do we know what God says?Up next is Leo from Canada who has been pushed back theism because of Matt. The caller doesn’t understand Matt’s position against worshipping a deity, and somehow this has put them back on the fence? Our final caller is Christ from CT is curious as to why Fundamentalist Christians are so against the separation of sex and gender when they themselves ascribe gender to their own God. Part of it is because their books don’t refer to sex or gender directly, as well as the fact that it offers a mechanism to control others.

The Atheist Experience 25.35 08-29-2021 with Matt Dillahunty and Shannon Q

The Atheist Experience

In today’s episode of the Atheist Experience, Matt Dillahunty is joined once again by Shannon Q. Welcome back Shannon!First up is Jeroen from the Caribbean who questions whether believers actually have a grieving process, or if they just use religion as a bandage. They are concerned with the consequences if said believer stops believing and is suddenly hit with that grief.Next is Steven from Washington who has questions regarding how active religious organizations can be within political movements and what actions are acceptable within the bounds of church/state separation.Next is Jamen from Germany who believes that Atheism has a burden of proof. Anyone who makes a positive claim has a burden of proof, whether they are an atheist or not.Up next is Javier from Minnesota who is wondering if our hosts think it’s wrong to believe in a God if it makes someone feel good. Also using the host’s answer to shift the conversation to race and gender is dishonest and gross.Next is Nick from California who has God-like knowledge of the creation of the universe.Up next is Rob from Georgia who wonders why some Atheists are afraid of certain depictions of heaven.Next is Jeffrey from Texas who is wondering where morality comes from if it is subjective to a specific culture.Last up is Josh from the Netherlands who deconverted from Islam but is struggling due to the sudden loss of his spirituality. The problem is that spirituality doesn’t really mean anything and appears to vary from individual to individual.

The Atheist Experience 25.33 08-15-2021 with Matt Dillahunty and Jenna Belk

The Atheist Experience

In today’s episode of the Atheist Experience, Matt Dillahunty is joined by Jenna Belk! Our first caller this afternoon is Riyaz from the UK. The caller proposes a scenario where there exists a place where snakes don’t bite and scorpions don’t sting and claims that this example would indicate the presence of a supernatural force.Next up is Paul from TX who claims that without a belief in God and that their existence in the universe is purposeful, society is diminishing.Next is Kevin from GA who wants to talk about how a God’s morality is irrelevant to whether it exists or not. Blindly worshipping a God whether you approve of its moral code or not because you believe that they are above you, without justification of its existence, is both irrational and degrading to yourself.Next up is Lisa from CO is wondering why they feel guilty or fearful whenever they see an image depicting Jesus. You are feeling guilty because you were indoctrinated to feel guilty by your religion, not because God is actively making you feel guilty.Up next is Orin from OR who knows with 100% certainty that they have communicated with God via a mysterious sentient cloud. Honestly, I’ve got nothing at this point...absolutely nothing.

Talk Heathen 05.31 08-01-2021 with Kenneth Leonard and Matt Dillahunty

Talk Heathen

Greetings Heathens! We hope to be a sanctuary for you in this chaotic world. In today’s episode of Talk Heathen, Kenneth Leonard is joined today by Matt Dillahunty. It should be a really great show!Let’s get to calls! James in North Carolina, has thought up a very specific criteria that could prove God if it can actually be done. It is made up of 3 stanzas and he’d like to run them by us. 1. A conversation with God while in a completely lucid state. 2. Confirmation that it was God by external witnesses. 3. Something tangible that was provided outside of this experience that proves this did occur that could be scientifically tested. Matt and Kenneth break these down for him.Samuel in Maine is next, he disagrees with churches' use of appeal to authority. Kenneth is a bit flummoxed by this interesting place to begin. It’s a great conversation.David in California, he has definite proof of God and is calling in to set us all straight. He is a return caller, you may recognize him. After a long preamble and whining about how he is being perceived, he finally gives his proof. He claims the universe and matter expanding into unknown space is the proof of God because God created this unknown space. Oh boy.Lord in California is wondering what to do with old Christian friends after deconverting and finding themselves in debates and conversations with them about religion. He is becoming frustrated with these talks and concerned about the impact on the relationships.Adam in Romania wants to disprove the existence of a deistic God. Um, ok? He starts by listing out premises using a replacement word for God.Kevin in New York is asking if anyone ever has asked about the contents of the ‘Ark of the Covenant.’ (Queue the Indiana Jones theme song.) How can we investigate the contents if the Ark doesn’t exist? Who can investigate the Ark and how can we know?Joe in Canada wants to talk about how specific labels put on people can potentially end conversations. How can we avoid or unpack this? Ooooh, perhaps try some street epistemology!Billy in Texas is calling about the need to prove that God doesn’t exist. But what if a God could exist? He brings up the quote by physicist Brian Cox: “Everything that can happen, would happen” and tries to apply it to proving the existence of God. Matt puts his feet to the fire asking if it’s possible for a God to not only exist but is capable of telling us it exists.EJ in Georgia is wondering what our take is on the Council of Nicaea and Ephesus and how it formed the canon of the Bible. Matt explains his position on it and how it is interesting in a historical context. That’s our show for this week, please continue to be safe in your area, wear your mask, and please get vaccinated. The world is better with you in it. See you next week!

Talk Heathen 05.28 07-11-2021 with JMike and Matt Dillahunty

Talk Heathen

Greetings Heathens! Hope you are being safe during the ongoing pandemic (still, sigh.) We hope to be a sanctuary for you in this chaotic world. In today’s episode of Talk Heathen, JMike is joined by Matt Dillahunty.Let’s get to calls! Mike in Ohio would like to discuss polytheism with JMike and Matt. Specifically the creation myth from the perspective of a polytheist. Kevin in New York is up next, he asks if the hosts are well versed or have complete knowledge of the Bible and if we are prepared to speak upon it. Matt says that he does not and never will have complete knowledge of the Bible and that this complete knowledge doesn’t exist for anyone. He goes on to say that complete knowledge isn’t required to draw conclusions from it.Jeff in California claims that God is more than just the Bible. He’s calling in to tell us about it. But first though; what’s your definition of God, Jeff? Omar in California wants to talk about logical fallacies we’ve used in the past with theists. Has Matt been able to identify his own logical fallacies from previous debates and would he be willing to discuss them? (He is and does!) Later in the call, Omar ends up being a complete and utter disappointment when trying to say he has knowledge and confidence about the universe preceding the Big Bang and that we are perpetuating fallacies by saying ‘I don’t know.’ Hey Omar, here’s a protip, don’t be an angry and condescending dudebro while speaking to us, you’ll get more bees with honey. That’s our show for this week, please continue to be safe in your area, wear your mask, and get vaccinated if you can. The world is better with you in it. See you next week!

Truth Wanted 04.18 05-07-2021 with ObjectivelyDan and Matt Dillahunty

Truth Wanted

Hello everyone. It’s Friday which means it’s time to welcome you all back to another episode of Truth Wanted. This week ObjectivelyDan is joined by the ACA’s very own Matt Dillahunty! The first caller of the evening is Justin from AL. They want to talk about the light topic of coming out as an atheist to grieving and ill family members. The decision that the caller has to make is if making sure that their father knows who they are is more important than maintaining peace in the relationship.Next up is Johnny from TX who is looking for advice on how to move forward with a frustrating debate about God. The definition of God, that God begins where our understanding ends,” is fallacious. If God is beyond our understanding, how can the one making the claim even begin to define it.Next is Glenn from PA who believes that Matt does not promote the positive Atheism that he and the ACA claims it does. The term positive Atheism has multiple definitions: either promoting atheism in a positive light, or stating that a specific God doesn’t exist or a specific belief system is wrong. The issue with the latter definition is that if the goal is to put the burden of proof where it belongs, then you want to argue against the points that are actually being presented, and not make unsubstantiated generalized claims about god’s existence.Up next is Rudy from OH who is curious to know what our host’s favorite cryptid story is. If anyone has proof of the “Deer Man,” please call in!Next is Evan from CO who is wondering what our host’s think about Jungian Psychology. Jungian Psychology seems to be able to provide answers for unexplained psychological phenomena. It appears to presuppose (deeper) meaning in phenomena that may not actually be there. Our last call for the night is Joao from TX and is wondering if the platypus’ weird combination of traits are an argument for evolution. Definitely, if you look back at its lineage, you can trace the changes over time that have led to its current, seemingly bizarre form. What a fantastic show that was! Thank you so much for joining us tonight. Please, please, please get vaccinated, and continue to do your part to keep yourself and everyone around you safe until we finally overcome this virus.
